Cel code u1000

Hello guys i have a 2007 g35x with 89k miles (purchased used 3 yrs ago at 56k miles). I was driving round trip about 300 miles last week and the CEL came on and i pulled over to get gas and noticed some smoke coming out from under the hood. Temp gauge did not rise but coolant reservoir was a little low but at the min. fill line. I let the car cool for 15 min and then drove the 15 min home. Took the car to a friend who looked at it and code was reading U1000 communication issue (he has a 06 g35 coupe, very swift with cars and knows a lot). Some past hx on the car. oil changed with pennzoil synthetic about 3k miles ago and changed regularly. Power steering, brake fluid, coolant, and AT fluid all drain and filled at a Nissan dealer 12 months ago. Have a appointment at Nissan to have them take a look at it this week. What do you guys think is going on? Car drives fine and have put around 50-75 miles since he reset the code. Thanks
