Engine Overheating Question

My Engine overheated yesterday, was driving in 101 degree heat through central cali and the grapevine averaging 80mph with the AC on high. Engine temps were stable then all of a sudden my car engine power cut off and went into fail safe mode. I noticed the check engine light and saw the engine temps all the way to H so I pulled over as fast as I could and turned the motor off. A little bit of coolant sprayed over the engine and I had it towed to the dealership. I did notice there was no visible coolant in the radiator and the overflow tank was bursting full. Engine code was overheating and they are running a block test. I had a couple questions, they said the thermostat will have to be replaced and the upper radiator hose collapsed, does this sound right when a car overheats? Also does our radiator caps release coolant when the pressure gets too high?

UPDATE: Nothing wrong with the block, they are just replacing the thermostat, upper rad hose, and the rad cap. Comes out to $640 from the dealer at 160/hr labor rate

Ouch, looks like you went to the Infiniti stealership! Mechanics must have taken their time, all these parts and new fluid could have been completed in two hours. Next time you need service we have a great independent shop in Van Nuys that won't drain your wallet. CarZone 818-373-1330

Yup, broke down on the i5 on the way to sf... had my hand tied behind my back with no tools. Also wanted to make sure my block was ok. The service team at Bakersfield Infiniti hooked me up and only charged me $360 but had to get a hotel room for a night. All in all, glad I didnt warp anything.
