Howdy,

I'm in the market for some jack stands and was wondering if anyone knows what the minimum height needs to be for the stands? I would be using a jack to raise the car then placing the stands on the support rails. I'd hate to purchase a set that ends up not fitting under the car.

Minimum jack stand height is 11" on the two sets I have, don't ever recall seeing anything less! Unless you have a floor jack (Harbor Freight sells them for around $100 that will last a life time) using anything else w/b a PIA! With those 11" jack stands in place you'll be able to change wheels or do oil changes easily...Gary

I was looking at this one the other day but I'm skeptical of Harbor Freight's quality.

 

I have a rule. No pneumatic or power equipment from HF.

YMMV.

 

HF jacks are fine. For someone using it every single day intensively ? No
For someone using it occasionally? 100% fine.

Just don't leave the car suspended by the jack only....

Unless you're lifting and keeping a truck/suv suspended, you shouldn't be worrying about "Jack stand height"
Really a non issue here for a G. Get Jack stands that are for the appropriate weight of your vehicle and be done with it

C'mon Jersey, I've been around here a very long time. I have reading pretty much down pat now

I know he was talking about stands while providing most of his info but the statement quoted is referring to their jacks. I was curious to know from a trusted source which is why I asked.

This. Stay away from HF floor jacks. Been there, done that with negative results. Their jacks are junk and will fail quickly. All you have to do is look at their warranty (90 days). Don't make me laugh.

 

Avoid. POS. If anything, get their 3 ton floor jack.

 

I have 6 of these. Owned than over a decade.

My Mustang spent 2 years sitting on 4 of them, and then I used the other 2 for G35 duties. Min height on these is 10.6". I used to jack up the front of the G35 and put them on the stands set on the 2nd or 3rd notch all the time to do oil changes.

I second the "no power or pneumatic from HF" sentiment. I basically say if I will only use a tool 2-3 times tops, I go to HF. If I need something i'll use a lot to last, I go elsewhere. I have had good luck with their impact sockets though. I've been using them a lot and they are doing fine.

 

I suggested Harbor Freight because of the availability and price! Everything in my garage came from either Sears or SnapOn and have had decades of service without issues!

You say this, but why does an impact socket have 12 points. I spun the edges off a 27mm socket because of them . I should have known better. I was trying to get off a bolt with 180 ft-lbs of torque lol.

 

Mine aren't. They are 6 pt sockets. But now I'll have to go doublecheck tonight. I was using them yesterday to install C5 brakes on my Mustang


To be honest, I don't have many 12-pt bolts on my car. Head bolts, header bolts, driveshaft bolts, but I'm not using an impact here. Im torqueing these.

 

It's rare anything has 12 points is what I'm getting at. 6 point sockets for life!
