Question Previously owned a 2007 V36 and wondering about very high mileage issues if I rebuy

Hi everyone,

I used to own a 2007 G35 RWD sedan, sold it in 2015 with about 175,000 km / 109,000 mi because we were leaving the country. This was the best car I ever owned. I was impressed with it for so many reasons we all know well.

Now that we're planning to return home I'm aiming to buy another 2007-2010 model year (AWD this time) for my wife. I'm seeing a lot of deals for high mileage cars but am wondering what issues people with 175-250 km / 109-155 mi generally see on their cars. If they're maintained well, are there any recurring issues that happen to some, many or most people that I should be aware of?

J

Blown actuator gaskets are the ones that will give you the biggest headache and expense in repairing on the VQ37HR 2007-2008 sedan, you really should try to get into something equipped with the VQ37VHR motor which was 2009+ it's a much better motor in every way.

Suspension will probably need some attention around those miles

Not probably - definitely, unless some parts of it were already replaced.

I recently purchased an 08 G35X with 37,000 miles. Does this happen when the miles get higher or is it common/random? Anyway to prevent or diagnose?

Thanks!

Diagnosis is easy because you get a P0021/P0011 codes 😁 unfortunately there isn't a way to prevent it and it happens at random, some HR's have the problem and some don't. If you Google search for those codes and do a bit of digging you'll probably find a ton of info on it just make sure you're reading about that code for the HR motor and not the DE motor.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't receiving my notifications because I had an old email address that was deleted a long time ago.

@ Cleric, thanks for the tip and I've done a bit of reading based on what you said.

First question I have is, if we're talking 07-08 model years (G35) then aren't we talking about the VQ35HR and not VQ37HR (G37)?

I did some digging about the actuator issue and this post seems to describe it best, however with all my Googling I can't find a typical cost for the repair. It does sound like many hours under the hood are necessary (7 or 12 depending on the post). Do you have an idea of how much that kind of failure costs?

More worrisome is that the actuator issue as described in that thread seems similar to the type of failure some VQ37HRs in G37s are vulnerable to from 09-11 model years which is described in this thread. The failure in those engines is a paper gasket in the rear timing cover which costs upwards of $3-4k USD! When I saw that I thought I should aim for the V36 VQ35HR, hence this post.

I'm trying to avoid a ticking time bomb, but from what I'm reading the VQs all have trouble up until 2012. Is that the consensus here on the G35Driver forum?

@ FreshLike & doh, noted re: suspension.

The VQ35HR is more prone to the gasket blowout than the VQ37VHR. I wouldn't necessarily call it a"ticking time bomb" but rather something to be aware of if a vehicle you test drive has a service engine light for those DTC's.

The VQ37VHR is better in every way over it's two predecessors so if you can get into a vehicle equipped with one it's worth the extra money but the DE and HR are still great engines and I wouldn't hesitate to own either. I have a rev-up equipped 2006 right now.

That repair can be expensive if you are paying to do the work, you can call your local Nissan and other reputable repair shops to get a quote just so you have an idea how much it would cost if you do run into that issue in the future.

Buying extended power train warranties might be something to consider if they are offered. I turny own wrenches so it would only cost me the gasket kit and a weekends worth of time so I'm not much help with that question.
