Prospective buyer questions about the engine reliability

Hi all,

I have been in the market for a RWD Manual sedan, which is becoming quite the unicorn these days. I have been looking for a g37 sport sedan for a long time because of the newer and more reliable engine, as I've heard some bad things about oil consumption on the 3.5 VQ engines.

I really could use some better qualified opinions and experience on the matter.

I want to know how reliable the engine is on the 07-08 G sedans. My research tells me that the oil consumption problems are more common in the VQ35DE and may have been addressed in the VQ35HR?
If anyone can confirm, or share their experience, i'd appreciate it.

'06 6mt sedan here (VQ35DE Rev-up) - I burn ~1 quart every 1000 miles, otherwise the engine has been bulletproof, just ticked over 173k yesterday.

Honestly the only time the oil consumption is a problem is for owners who don't check their oil level regularly, they supply the local pick-and-pull scrap yard with plenty of fresh parts for me to sift through so I don't mind at all.

I have an 08 automatic and i don't have this problem. I even supercharged my G and still don't have this problem. The only problem that i been having is all the aftermarket stuff that is on the car. Everything that is OEM is perfect. i am pushing 97k miles on the car

I have an '07 S (HR) with 123k miles. It doesn't consume an unusual amount of oil between 5k mile changes. Sometimes I need to top it up with 1/4 quart after 2-3k, sometimes not.

I'm fairly new to this stuff but from what I understand, the oil-burning issues were on the "DE" (and earlier ?) engines. Nissan appears to have resolved it with the "HR" engines.

Now, any engine can burn some amount of oil over time or if things wear out faster than usual but overall it's not the same problem as earlier engines had.

^ Yes, that does seem to be the case. The OP was asking for personal experiences to back it up.

The model you're looking at doesn't have unusual oil burning issues. Most of the oil burning issues were with the rev-up motor (05-07 6mt coupe and 05-06 6mt sedan). The regular DEs never had a recall. These motors are pretty bulletproof; it's the suspension that you should concern yourself with.

Just for reference, you have 3 motors in the G35:

VQ35DE: all 03/4 cars as well as all auto coupes 03-07 and all auto sedans 03-06. No recall for oil burning *some people claim oil burning*

VQ35DE rev-up: 05-07 6mt coupes and 05-06 6mt sedans - heavy oil burning - situational recall

VQ35HR: 07-08 sedans - most issues were worked out here. No oil burning issues known.

FWIW, my 07 Sport sedan doesn't burn a drop @153k, and is certainly no stranger to the upper reaches of the tachometer

My 04 used about 2 quarts of synthetic over my last winter oil change interval which was around 7000 miles. (I put in a quart at some point thru and at the change 4 quarts came out)

Now that it's summer and I'm redlining every day I'm running conventional on a 3000 mile interval, I plan to add half a quart at 1500 and call it good.

My 2006 rev-up I add about 1/8 quart every week which is 300 miles of commute, sometimes a little more if I'm standing on the throttle a lot.

Not to hijack but please go into further detail about the suspension? Just purchased a used 08 G35X 5AT with 37K miles.

Rear differential bushing, front upper control arm bushings, and compression rod bushings all have fairly short lifespans at about 80k before developing enough play that they need replacement.

3.5VQHR doesn't use oil but can be hit with this internal gasket failure that affects oil pressure. I plan to add a oil pressure gauge and get it fixed if it seems mine is affected. I do most of my work but don't have time if hit with this one. Car is in still great shape and relatively low mileage so if I have to throw $1500-$2k at it...it will still be worth it.

Ah, yes, I forgot about the HR timing cover gasket. That can be a problem.
