Newbie Questions about G35S Brakes & buying parts

Hello all,

I just bought a 2007 G35S, and this is my first "performance" car, and my first car in a while. The car has Brembo brake caliper (covers?) and I was wondering if that entails using only Brembo brake pads or if I can use others that are marked for use with the sport package (i.e. on RockAuto).

I am also looking to buy the steering rack & pinion, front struts and wheel bearing and hub for the rear. I would appreciate any good/reputable websites and brands you guys could recommend for these as this is my first vehicle in the US and I am kind of clueless at the moment.

Thanks

PS: can the G35 play mp3 from USB? If not, whats the best alternative? I can't seem to understand the memory card option either.

Take a picture of these Brembos and post it. They were not an option for that year so someone probably did a brake swap from a 2003-2004.

Bearings and such I like both Timken and Moog.

OK just talked to an Infiniti dealer, and apparently this did not have the sport package, according to the VIN. Some online VIN decoders identify it as a sport though and others don't. I am a bit confused, as I don't want to order the wrong parts.

I have attached pictures of the brakes. Is there a way to identify what pads would go with this without opening it up?

Those are aftermarket. Are they real Brembo even (beware, there are plenty of fake out there)?

'07 and '08 G35 (or later G37) never has Brembo as option from the factory. '07 / '08 Sports brakes has bigger calipers and rotors, but they are not fixed caliper like Akebono brakes. They are still floating calipers.

G37s started using Akebono fixed calipers front and back.

lol guys I'm keeping them. Unless I can find the OE covers cheap. I don't even know if this one had original covers and if so what they looked like.

Im assuming theres no cover for the original calipers. Theyre just your typical looking cast calipers...like how it is on my car.

If u wanna keep those Brembo covers then go ahead. Most people wont even be able to tell theyre not actual Brembos. I eidnt even know those existed until that other thread popped up a few days ago on this forum lol.

There's nothing wrong with those covers if you like them (or are neutral on them). It's just the initial confusion they caused

Standard floating calipers (like you have) don't have "covers", at least not typically. Covers are only for appearance, not functional.

Yep got it. Not many G35s/G37s out here so I had no idea. Even the mechanics I showed it to had no clue, even though some of them have brembos on their cars.

But yeah I think the red accent looks nice with the dark wheels.

I'm very tempted to paint my calipers as I think they definitely look better but if I do, it will be a bit more subtle than red. Probably a silver or something similar to the rotor (machined metal) or the wheels or body color (platinum in my case). Black would be an option for me too.

Agreed, paint matched calipers look great. And yes gloss black on a black G35 does look fantastic. They quickly turn a matte finish if you don't wash your wheels weekly but it's so easy to just carry a wheel brush (or just a dishwashing bottle brush if you're on the cheap) with your washing equipment and it's definitely worth it.

Caliper covers aside, you need to know if you have a sport before you order parts. If automatic transmission, do you have shifter paddles? What about chrome accents on the pedals? If you have 17 inch wheels it isn’t a sport. If it has 18, it still might not be a sport, without those other things, and more, starting with the struts you want to replace.
My G35S has had lots of work done this year, as it turned 120k. RockAuto is good, except when you need a part in order to get to work Monday morning!

It has all those things, but its not a sport. Sport seats, sport pedals, shifter paddles, 18" staggered wheels etc. Infiniti dealerships I talked to said the shifter paddles came with the tech package, and that this VIN did not have the sport package, only had tech, premium and nav packages. My guess is a previous owner put all the sport stuff in.
