Rear Main Seal Work
Rear Main Seal Work
I'm the original owner of a 2008 G35X, with 163K miles. Love the car. I really want to keep the car for 3+ years.
I've been putting money into the car over the past few years. Now, I'm being told that my rear main seal is leaking, based on there's oil on the cross member under the engine.
With that said, can someone please provide general information on what's done? My understanding is the transmission needs to be dropped and the upper oil pan needs to be dropped? So besides replacing the rear main seal, the 2 "moon gaskets" have to be replaced? What are the "moon gaskets"? What else has to be done?
In addition to this work, is it worthwhile to replace the engine mounts and transmission mounts, assuming there's no additional labor cost and just cost for parts?
Finally, I'm in northern New Jersey. Does anyone know of a good mechanic in northern New Jersey/southern New York state?
TIA

can you post a picture? that crossmember can be dirty from all kinds of other fluids/places. you don't need to remove the upper pan on the HR (unlike DE). the rear main sits inside of its housing and you can just pop it out and in, thankfully.
re: engine mounts. you can jack the engine up and see how much play you have in yours by wiggling them. if they are flopping around, then sure, you can replace them. same for the tranny mount.
