Place holders are usually just blanks, like the rectangle above it.
The overall shape, lines/illumination on the ends & the depression in the middle??
Looks like it was designed for something

Why not just press the start button ? Doesn't the system know you've gained access to the vehicle by using a spare key ? I thought it was a slot to insert the I-key when the battery is dead so the system knows you have it and you'll be able to start your vehicle when you push the start button. That would make sense. I think that's what you meant. Your post was just a little confusing.

The "spare" key is usually intergrated into the intelligent Key-fob...or at least it is on the Lexus. I hope they come out with a nice-looking key-fob at least...I think it's a minor detail that can make a big difference in satisfaction. If you've ever seen a VW/ Audi key-fob...you'll know what I mean. It has a nice slow-moving fold-out key extension....almost seems bearing driven.
Funny thing is...I don't thinkt he Lexus IS has any keyholes on the doors...so I don't know how you would get in if your batt. died :O
