Stock Intake vs. Z tube

Is there any difference between the gas mileage the G gets with the stock intake verses the Z tube intake?

Also, I don't think so, but does VDC affect gas mileage?

Z tube probably helps by like 0.5-1mpg

I thought it might be less efficient. I have a Z tube and just drove a full tank like a grandma (in town) and got 16 mpg. If I drive normal, I get about 14.

z tube won't even help you that much. The downside will be your right foot trying to see what performance gains it gave you.

Also, VDC off will not help gas mileage either. You might even be tempted to light up the tires with it off. Just change your driving habits if you really want to get the best fuel efficiency. Intake and exhaust shouldn't hurt your MPG's, as long as you get a more efficient setup.

Well, I have been driving like a grandma, coasting a lot once up to speed anticipating red lights and slowing down earlier, not doing jack rabbit starts, etc., and I only managed to increase the mileage from around 14 to around 16 mpg. I thought I could get better mileage than that, even in town. I guess not. I just read a post where, I think, GeeWillikers, got 20+ mpg driving like a grandma with 89 octane.

Does the mileage on the car make a difference? My car is a 2004, but it only has 13,000 miles on it.

regular tuning might make a difference. i've read millions of posts discussing MPG for a car and my opinion is:
easy breathing for car (intake & exhaust) that is well maintained (synthetic oil, usage of recommended gas) will give you a good MPG.

i have an '06 coupe M6 and I get about 23.6MPG CITY driving. I change my gears at around 3K RPM. If I decide drive a bit rash (change gears at about 4-5K RPM consistently) then I get about 17-19MPG in the city in a full tank.

When I bought the car, I was getting 16mpg no matter how I drove. I put K&N OEM replacement filter, put in castrol syntec 5w-30 oil and have used 91 octane gas consistently from Sunoco. This improved the MPG drastically.

back to original topic, I'm tempted to do the Z-tube mod and see how this makes a difference. I'll be doing it more for the sound though
what's a good place to buy the z-tube? anyone know a place in GTA?

Buy one of a 350z person!

You can buy aftermarket "z" tubes. Stillen, Unlimited Tuning and a few others make them.

yeah, i'll be getting a used one for sure... just clean it out and install it. btw, i've been reading up some older posts and ppl have complained about the pipe rubbing against the a/c lines and other stuff. is that an issue with the z-tube or only when installed in combination with the popcharger?

also, what's a g-tube? just a fabricated z-tube to fit the G35 better or the z-tube should be able to clear everything?

the z-tube is just a tube that doesnt have the sound dampering crap on it.. itll give you more sound... but i dunno about mileage...but a better sound when you accelerate etc.... might as well go with a cai or sr intake, because an after market filter might give you better mileage if you dont have a heavy foot

yeah i don't think the z-tube itself would have any effect on mileage. your filter being clean will though.

^ I wouldn't go with a cold air intake or short ram intake because cai's have been known to cause the car to stall while driving (DANGEROUS!) and short ram intakes suck in hot air from the engine bay (because the heat insulation that comes with them is crappy) which causes power loss in the lower RPMs (which is important on the freeway or in panic situations). Just use a z-tube and the stock air box. If you really want to change the air filter, go stillen, as it looks like it has the best (if you call plastic best) heat insulation.

That's my humble opinion. :P

If it helped even that much, then Nissan would have used it to begin with.

Absolutely no difference at all. One has a noise suppression and the other doesn't. Can't believe people still discuss this

Only mod I noticed a MPG increase (~1.5 to 2 mpg) after was my exhaust and HFCs.

When you say "coasting", if you have a 6MT you don't mean putting the car into neutral do you? If so, you'll actually get better gas mileage leaving it in gear. In newer cars at higher speeds if you leave a MT in gear with no throttle, your injectors shut off and your engine essentially becomes an air pump as it slows your car down. Your air-fuel ratio will be 0.0. In neutral, your A/F ratio is probably ~15 and fuel is actually being injected.

You guys are getting 14-16 MPG? How much gas to fill the G's tank? I drove from San Francisco to Los Angeles in a full-tank with a little bit of gas left (I had to stop since we're heading straight to OC)

From my calculation, I was getting 25+MPG maybe even more. Was I seeing things? At that time, we only have the HKS exhaust installed.
