White smoke from exhaust
White smoke from exhaust
We got some freezing rain last night and my G was completely coated in ice. By this morning it had melted but when I tried to turn on my car it wouldn't turn over so I kept trying and giving it a little gas to get it going. I eventually got it to turn on but it turned right off. i tried again and got it to start but then I noticed white smoke billowing out and a distinct burning smell. It is quite clear that I'm not seeing white smoke simply because it's cold but I'm wondering what the problem is. I've read that I may have antifreeze in my oil but the oil doesn't look as though it's contaminated and I can't imagine I blew a gasket trying to turn on the car but what do I know.
White smoke is normal in cool weather! Don't know why you'd have issues starting your G unless of course you left it outside in subzero weather. Never having these issues maybe someone from the "frozen north" might have a better answer as to why you had starting problems....

White smoke is typically coolant. To me, it smells similar to burnt sugar/caramel.
If the temperature was below freezing and your anti-freeze was not at a strong enough concentration you may have frozen. Not a good thing, may have cracked a head or block, if you are lucky a gasket. Do you see any external coolant leaks?

White smoke can also just be condensation (which would make sense, given the freezing rain). What does the burning smell like? Are you still getting the smell/white smoke when you start, or was it just that one time?
both times I started it yesterday, I read that if I blew a header and antifreeze got into the oil that I should not start it so i haven't started it up since though it doesn't look like antifreeze got into the oil I'm just hesitant
