Exclamation Grinding sound from the rear.

Hello Im new to this site.
I registered and did some searching. I found a lot of useful information.

But it doesn't answer what Im still trying to figure out. While I was driving my car I could hear a sound sort of like a grinding. At first I figured that the sound was coming from my axles so I stopped and checked them and they were both fine. I kept driving and the sound just got worse. I pulled over and removed my tire and checked everything I could see yet nothing was wiggly. I didn't pay attention to the wheel bearings because it never crossed my mind. But I will check those in the A.M.(info I gathered up) So the noise sounded like grinding metal when I first heard it, then it started to sound like clicking and clacking and some squeaking/squealing. The faster I drove and kept the speed up for longer periods of time it would stop the clicking and clacking but the squeaking was still there. Sometimes I even felt a few knocks like something was banging in the back of my car. Im beginning to think it may be the differential but I don't know. This is why I am here.

I'd really appreciate anyone's advice/input on this matter. This is my wife's daily driver and ATM my own personal car is down as well. I rather fix her car before I fix mine. Thanks!

You do realize we aren't paid to answer you, correct?

Search around the forums for the unique sound threads. I'm calling one of your bearings is on it's last days. Lift the rear end of the car with your given scissor jack and check the wheel play. This means how the wheel shifts when you push the top of center and pull it back towards you (lightly). Do you notice play in the wheel to lead to the bearing issue?

Check your torques on the wheels, a lug could be loose.

There could also be something stuck under your car that causes a whistling.

Wheel bearings are common. I'd bet a $1 it's these. Sometimes pulling the rotors off and turning makes it easy to diagnose.

Unfortunately any suggestions we make are guesses because we'd have to physically look at the car.

pull the diff plug out and see if there is any metal on it. If there is, you got problems with diff, if not, jack up the car and spin the wheels to see if noise replicates. You can also turn drive line by hand (this way you will spin the diff) and see if you can locate the source of the noise.

Also could be something as silly as a rock stock between brake pad and rotor.
