04 G35 Sedan performance package. 70k Eibach springs and sway bars. 19 inch wheels. Plenum spacer.
I'm curious. My DE uses no oil yet the HR is known for it. How does that make the DE unviable?

Auctions. Maheim is a popular one.

If you have the space I would totally recommend buying the whole car if you have the space.

Proper preventative maintenance and no history of abuse can provide better life.

The DE's horrible record comes from IT being the first generation placed in a RWD Sports/luxury vehicle.

It all starts with spark plugs or misfires. We can all agree that most wont address these on these cars in a timely manner. Cat's start to deteriorate and once that happens your air fuels richen.

Misfires can happen due to fouled plugs due to bad gas or leaky VC dues to cost of replacement. Lets say you fix your valve covers however the oil already weakened a coil that gives a random misfire. This will destroy the cat. once that happens your air fuels richen.

Once your air fuels turn rich, you'll finalize your cats and either you'll replace them with cheap ones or keep riding like this. We can all agree that OEM cat replacement is not a cheap one whether new or used. and We can also agree driving with a p0420 is not a worry for most.

That's until the richer airfuels slowly glaze the cylinder walls, this in turn will leak some compression into the crank case giving you the famous oil in the pcv issue, most dont discover this until later, that oil will be mixed back into the combustion chamber and lower your final octane making your plugs take the toll.

Just because your engine has not given you these issues doesnt mean it speaks for the rest, my DE had no issues when I purchased, Many nissan oem NEW parts later she decided she wants to burn oil.

The data doesnt lie, this was a poll created by this forum.

Around 17% of people report 1/4 to 1 quart oil loss between changes yet 83% report little to none.

It's your turn to search how many DE member suffer from oil consumption and you can make the determination for yourself.

Wasn't the early HR known for the inside timing cover gadlet failure? I'm not interested in another poll. As a 8 month G35 owner I'm just curious.

You're thinking of the oil galley gasket that's prone to failure. The DE consumes oil, the HR has a gasket that fails and causes oil starvation in the head. Still a better engine overall.

I've never looked at oil consumption on a higher performance motor as a problem unless it became excessive. My bosses 2017 Z06 is drinking a quart PER DAY on the track, this is expected behavior, same with most high performance motors that are still equipped with emissions gear. The DE may not be high performance based on modern standards but it's still a high performance engine, unless you're running boost (fixed with a pcv delete), or starve the engine for oil (check weekly) then the consumption isn't actually a PROBLEM.

It's an inconvenience.

Not going to disagree about the HR being a better motor though. However in the same sense the VHR is an even better motor and with headers/exhaust/intake/tune are pushing almost 350whp. That's a 10 year old engine so finding a wrecked VHR platform might be better than an HR platform, if the price is right obviously.

Check out www.copart.com and see if they have an auction location near you. I've used them in the past for buying wrecked/salvage vehicles.
