Oil Dipstick?

Oil Dipstick?
I had a question about then oil dipstick, Does the dipstick go right into the engine block or should there be a tube from the engine that the dipstick goes into?
Mine gets stuck directly into the engine itself and it is very heard to get an accurate reading on the dipstick.
No matter how long you let the engine sit non-running or how many times you wipe the dipstick clean when you insert it and pull it back out the stick still comes out with oil everywhere on the dipstick and it's hard to tell where the level is on it.
Is it just me or my incompetence with this car or is this kind of an issue with them all?
Mind you, I am 53 and have owned 20+ some odd cars in my life and worked on them all along with probably a hundred others so I am not an idiot newb to cars. I just have not had such a problem with checking the oil level on a vehicle before....

It's just one of those things that you have to sorta work with - took me a few weeks to understand what was going on as the design of it allows it to pick up oil residue as it is being withdrawn or pushed into place. I have had my G for a long time now - 14 years - just a quirt of the car.
