Reading dipstick... how much oil to add?

We all know how difficult it is to read that dipstick, so my technique is to let the car sit for >30min then read the oil level. Well, I'm 3K into my current fill and the oil is at the halfway mark on the high to low mark on the stick; so how much do I add? I vaguely remember someone stating that the high to low area represents one quart... any truth to this?

It's my understanding that most if not all dipsticks are marked in this fashion, ie. that the low mark is 1 quart (or liter) below max full.

As long as the oil is between the high and low marks you are fine. The marks represent the fifth quart.
