O2 and CAT code from OBD-II

My 2004 Infiniti G35 coupe was not used for a year. The battery was taken out. I recently replaced it with a new battery.

Now I can’t pass the NYS inspection because of an O2 and CAT code failure.

Two different mechanics have told me to drive the car around. One of them told me to start the car and let it idle for 5 minutes, then drive for at least 20 miles at 50 mph. He also said not to turn off the the car, not to reset the ECU, and have at least 3/4 of a tank of gas. What is the reason behind this?

Anytime u disconnect the battery the ECU gets reset. You have to drive a certain amount of miles so the ECU can complete all its checks of the emissions systems.

Put in some premium gas and drive the car around pretty hard. U might just have to burn off all the crap. What codes is it showing ?

Should I empty the tank first? The gas gauge never shows it filling up completely. I fill the tank, but the needle is between 3/4 full and full.

There is the O2 and CAT code. Also, the code for running lean is showing. I will ask the mechanic to check an exposed MAF sensor wire (see pic). However, I passed the inspection last year with the exposed wiring.

I’ve driven for 170 miles on the highway and locally. I’m not sure if I have driven 50 mph consistently for 20 minutes, but I have driven 3 hours nonstop, mostly in free flowing highway traffic.

Can I turn off the engine after a long drive, and then go to get the NYS inspection? Sometimes I have other things to do before going to the mechanic.

I doubt one year old gas is bad enough that it needs dumping. If the car runs fine, then its good.

170 miles should have been plenty to get the car ready for a amog check.

Any updates?
