HONOLULU -- An 18-year-old woman died early Monday morning in a single-car crash on Moanalua Freeway, that may have happened because the driver was racing, according to police.

The crash happened in the eastbound direction just after the Red Hill overpass just after midnight.

The woman died at the scene.

Paramedics treated the driver of the car, a 19-year-old male, and took him to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said it appears the driver may have been racing with another car, described as a dark-colored vehicle, at the time of the crash.

Officers shut down the eastbound lanes of the freeway, one westbound lane because of debris from the crash and several onramps during its investigation.

Car crash kills one teen, critically injures another

Advertiser Staff

An 18-year-old woman died and the driver of the car she was in was critically injured late last night in a high-speed automobile accident on the Moanalua Freeway, authorities said.
The 19-year-old driver of the car was taken The Queen's Medical Center where his current condition was unavailable. Police said the pair were in a gray, 2004 Infinity traveling in the east-bound direction about 11:55 p.m. yesterday when the driver lost control about a half mile before the Ala Kapuna overpass. Witnesses told police that the car was moving eratically at a high rate of speed just before the driver lost control.

The car flew sideways and rolled several times before landing on its roof in a grass culvert on the side of the freeway. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver and his passenger were both wearing seatbelts, police said.

Traffic investigators suspect another vehicle — possibly a dark blue Toyota compact — was involved in the accident and are asking the public's help.

Witnesses with information are asked to call 529-3068. It was the second fatal traffic incident on Oahu in less than 24 hours — and the second involving a teenager.

what a waste of a car and life. He shouldn't have put another person's life on stake because of a race. That guy is in for a long list of infractions

When I first saw it I thought it was one of my friends but he actually has a 06 and he's not a racer type so I figured it wasn't him

I new of one of the guys who died in that accident. The kid was a wrestler (a good one) from Kahuku. I've wrestled against some of best who've come out of Hawaii and he definitely could have gotten a scholarship to college.

It's unfortunate, but yeah it's happened in the past and will continue to happen.

^ true. also, if there was another vehicle involved, their lives are gonna suck too. if they don't fess up, her spirit will haunt them. if they do fess up, they spend a couple years in prison, get an enlarged butthole, and be bedridden for life.

^^
screw that! they may end up killing bystanders as a result to their idiocracy. even if there's no surefire way to stopping street racing...but educate them on the end-result of a serious mishap.
