My Nismo CAI & Kinetix Plenum V+

UPDATED ONCE

So i posted about which plenum is better and TonyG35DG just so happened to have a kinetix V+ plenum lying around his house. He already installed the MD 5/16 Spacer so he didnt need it anymore.

Basically he gave it to me but i had to do some work on it. It was actually in great shape just the paint was a little faded and silicone was everywhere but the custom made G"dirty"5© - Flange Gasket® did its job.

I was going to (at first) just put the plenum on and buy another one later since i got it for free, but after thinking about it i decided to clean it up and repaint it, and order the gaskets from Kinetix.

Heres how i got it.

<br /><img src="http://a529.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/58/l_58c0b96a24b7f0be2d7cec0cfa37f990.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><br />

<br /><img src="http://a477.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/28/l_dffc4b08e620428a9196da7dd5b989a4.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><br />

Heres when i scraped off the silicone.

<br /><img src="http://a256.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/73/l_929a03fa0eb899092ee71fad9981cbc7.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><br />

Then heres after i sanded it.

<br /><img src="http://a925.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/32/l_e57bbc58d058f79ea4a5e16e2841bce4.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><br />

Then a couple coats of black

<br /><img src="http://a33.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/31/l_333ff3f6d7d95f174dc92f59796f0a20.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><br />

And some red and clear coat

<br /><img src="http://a30.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/22/l_c27652b00b1ff16701cdb6782c061465.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><br />

Basically costed me a couple hours of my time and $20 for sand paper, a steel wool pad, paint & clear coat. Depend on how much the gaskets cost, but looks like i got a good deal.

Just waiting for the Nismo CAI, should be in by friday, I might stop by infiniti 2maro (monday) and pick up a couple extra throttle body gaskets and the intake plenum gasket just incase. So when the intake arrives im going to install it and post more picks ill keep you guys updated shoots.

This was actually a fun weekend project thanks Tony

^ yeah i was stuck deciding what i wanted but because my Nismo Intake is Red and Black, I went this route. Was leaning more towards a grey, but its all good if i really want to i can re-paint the letters since its in-bedded its really easy.

oh yeah now i see why you went with the red lettering, makes sense to keep the color scheme going.

Nice

But your plenum is too big. I'll be here when you stop by.

anybody know if i need anything else besides this plenum and the gaskets? i was looking at the stock plenum and it uses six bolts in the middle, this kinetix plenum has no holes on top to put these six bolts. so that means i would have to cover the holes under the plenum right? maybe with shorter bolts?

You're right Chad, looks like you'll need to cap off the holes with short bolts. Check out this instruction:

Those are probably the six bolts Larry was talking about.

todays attempt = FAIL.

got everything on all good but there was leaks so the plenum was whistling tried to hondabond it but again, FAIL.

after taking it apart about 3 times and putting it back together i decided to put the stock plenum back on. Got it on and started it up no problem, only the Check Engine light turned on.

called infiniti and they said to double check my ****, but it was perfect and there was no stutter in the motor at all. I reset my ECU (can be found here http://www.350z-tech.com/zwiki/Tutorial:ECU_Reset) and the Check Engine light shut off. Guessing its all good cause ive been driving the car and the Check Engine light hasn't come back on.

Basically a job that i can do in an hour took me 5 today.

but its all good i can install this **** with my eyes closed now. but whatever. gonna send the plenum to Kinetix to get it re gasketed and try again. Regasketing costs $30 + shipping. hopefully next week monday the intake doesnt give me this much problems.

all in all a good learning experience.

emailed kinetix today and figure out how much its gonna cost me to fix

$20 for hardware kit (bolts and cooling block)
$30 for gasket
$35 for shipping back to hawaii
$20-$35 to ship to Kinetix

all in all with the paint and bolts i bought its going to cost about $140
thats makes it out to be about $210 saved (it costs about $350 shipped to hawaii).

Damn that Nismo CAI looks nice, making me tempted to swap out the pop charger for a CAI too. Gotta stop the urge, no more modding the car!

Chad, is that the short ram? Did you have to rip out foams behind the bumper?
