Anyone got car rental hookups? :)
Anyone got car rental hookups? :)
Hi guys
I got a favor to ask you.
I'll be visiting your islands (Big Island) from 3rd of next month to 13th
I was wondering if any of you got any hookups for a car rental.
I'm thinking of renting Jeep Wrangler so I can do some exploration
So if anyone could hook me up with some kind of deal that would be Awesome.
I'm flying in to ITO noon on 3rd and flying out 4pm on 13th.
Also let me know if there are any MUST SEE places on the island
Thanks

If you get the jeep, Wapio is great, especially if it's rained recently - big waterfalls.
Even if it hasn't rained, there's a few that always are pouring. Without a jeep, it's a steep hike up and down the road, it's worth it, but if you're not in good shape, it's more worth it to pay one of the local tour guides to take you through it.
Other must-hits:
Sunset from near the top of Mauna Kea. View from the observatory information station, and after sunset you'll be able to do the stargazing stuff too.
Anywhere there's flowing lava is a definite photo op.
Volcanoes Nat'l Park is a whole write-up in itself, but do the hike that you walk along the bottom of one of the craters, and be sure to see the new crater at night.
Both of the "Southernmost" food places (Shaka's and the other one) are damn good eats for damn good prices.
Here's the photos from my trips:

Most of them are geotagged so you can just throw them in your GPS or paper map to find them.
Oh, and one more thing, the eastern half of saddle road (goes up to Mauna Kea from Hilo) was repaved like a year ago, and is curvy, smooth, and a blast to drive, but not in a jeep. It may be worth it to have a decent handling car (Mazda3 may be available for a day, and is quite competent in the twisties, even if it is underpowered) just for that road alone.
