Accident on Kapiolani/Keeamoku this morning (5/14/05)
Wassup guys & gals, just thought I'd post this one up. So I'm walking to Ala Moana SC at 7:20a, and the intersection by KFC, I see this white '94-'97 white Integra coupe like all banged up and both airbags blown, sitting on the sidewalk. Still almost half-asleep, I was like, WTF? and I see this woman lying on the ground, somewhat bleeding, and this crowd of people standing around helping her, etc. etc.
Minutes later, police, fire, and rescue crews arrive on the scene and I overhear the witnesses telling the cops what happened. The driver, an early 20s-ish Korean punk apparently tried to run the red light going makai-bound on Keaaumoku turning left, when he hit the woman crossing the intersection (according to witnesses, she was in the right-of-way) and slammed into the traffic light post before coming to a stop on the sidwalk.
It gets worse. According to the witnesses, as one of the bystanders opened up the driver side door to help get the driver out, the driver tried to drive off but they pulled him out of the car and turned off the engine. What's more, apparently this Korean guy's Korean chick was at that saimin place (next to the trolley stops), approached the car, opened up the passenger side door (I think this was right after she saw the car come to a crashing halt) and tried to get in the car to claim that she was a passenger in the accident. When the other bystander pulled her away and said "No, you can't go in there, this is a crime scene," she started yelling at him saying "Why do you hate me and want to ruin me?" or something like that, according to what the witnesses were telling the cops.
The cops did a breathalizer and made him do that walk, and they ended up handcuffing him and taking him to HPD. I'm not sure if he got busted for DUI, but they at least busted him for reckless driving and for an attempted hit and run, I guess. As far as the lady, she wasn't like dismembered or anything but she looked pretty messed up, but I think she's going to be ok.
The moral of the story: watch your crosswalks and don't ever take for granted that the driver(s) know what they're doing, see you, etc. etc. and be careful! Fortunately, there were a lot of bystanders and witnesses in the area that were able to render aid to the fallen woman and to stop that guy from fleeing the scene. I guess it also helps to have a camera phone in case if you ever get into/witness an accident.

As for the lady, she seemed messed up but I think she's going to be ok.

Good thing I wasn't there, though, since if he had tried to pull that **** on me, I would have slapped him around a bit, and probably got arrested for assault...

The buggah must’ve seen the green, made the turn, but not realized that peeps can cross the street at that time, and then katoosh!
auwe!I’ve seen a pedestrian accident like that at the Kahala Zippy’s/Blockbuster intersection. I totally agree with you,-- can’t take for granted that you got the walk signal & are in the crosswalk... I’ve heard the term “you’re dead right” used to describe what can happen.
Anyways, I’m glad the lady’s gonna be ok, and I give whoever-it-was props for having the cahones to make sure the driver didn’t run off.
