I dont know. If you ask me...in the "real" world, there still isnt any replacement for displacement. If you are looking to push the motor hard and need the power...a big 8 would be my choice. The smaller engines though can produce the power, would need to work hard. This creates more heat, harder wear, faster break down to oil and parts, versus generating the same amount of power at 2K revs lower.

For police work...and long driving and wear...if it wasnt for the reliability issues...I would get a big V8. Though for the big 3...Dodge would be on the bottom end. Chevy, Ford, then Dodge is my preference. There is still talk about a 2007 Camaro coming out though. That is a thought for me....esspecially since a crate LS7 can be had for a mere $13K with a $2K ECU module. Imagine 500+ horsepower for $15K pure drop in swap. Nothing else needs to be done. Cant say that about my G. It would take about $20K to do the same job for the same amount of power and thats boosted versus a pure motor instant power engine. A little more work and that engine can produce 700+ horsepower quite easy.

If the application of the usage of the vehicle fits...I would say get a V8 powered car. Maybe not the Dodge...but something along that line would be fine I think. As good as the VQ35 is...the wear and tear will still be high due to the RPMs needed to create the power that it sounds like you are looking for. The 4.6V8 in the Mustang creates 300HP@5750 and 320lb-ft@4500 versus the G35 (03 version) with 260HP@6200 and 270lb-ft@4800. So it takes about an extra 500RPM's EVERYTIME to generate the max HP (40HP less) and 300 RPM's more to generate 50lb-ft LESS torque. In time, those numbers will add up really fast. If you boost the engine...you will be needing to keep the RPMs high to stay in the power band...and you are creating more heat and complications for the engine. Everyday driving might be okay with it...but the punishment that a police car goes through with the miles and the constant stop and go driving might cause added complications that just was not factored into the FI package and assembly. I could be wrong...but its just my thoughts in regards to power, work needed to create that equivalent power, and reliability.

The only issue as mentioned is reliability though. That is something that you will have to consider and weight yourself. Engine wise...I always liked V8's...sound and power...plus easy to fix. Everything else is a toss up though in regards to reliability. Get the extended-extended warranty .

American cars are getting better...but the Japan imports are still more reliable in the run so far. All reports are still confiming that view point.

Ultimately though, I think that we are looking at this from one view point and your job neccesitates perhaps a different vehicle approach.

Either way you go......we still will invite you to food parties.

dis coming from one chick! granted, a chick with inherently good taste (for choosing a G)...
the ladies may say "ugly"; while the men say "bad @ss"
IMO, the M is waaay too nice to be using as a street cruiser. heck, i get nervous even in my G when my girlfriend is holding onto a couple plate lunches picked up from Rainbow's...
plus, those on the force have two things to deal with
1) public scrutiny: their car's cannot be too luxurious or too sporty, otherwise the public would complain.
2) bean-counting budgeting: no reimbursement for premium gas (unless they were grandfathered in).

Well I test drove it today... Didn't really get to really open up....
My thoughts:
Felt like driving a tank that could get up a move. The car felt really big. No zipping in and out of traffic.
The power was not that impressive. Maybe because it was quiet and was smooth in shifting. One thing it is easier and cheaper to mod.
I really like the look but it just felt like I was going to down grade myself.

I am still thinking about it.... They gave me a deal, that I could walk out with it today. I mean a deal that was very, very, very hard to walk away from. It was a Black Charger R/T (Road and Track Package) with black leather interior.

Used cars to avoid

These are CR's lists of unreliable cars as of the 2005 survey. Below are the vehicles with below-average Used Car Verdicts for specific model years.

Here are a list of the Dodges on the list. The Charger is too new to be included, but can give you an idea of the quality of their vehicles.

Dodge Caravan (4-cyl.) '98, ‘01-03; Caravan (V6) '98, ‘00-03; Grand Caravan ‘00-03; Grand Caravan (4WD) '04; Grand Caravan (AWD) '99; Dakota (2WD) '98, '05; Dakota (4WD) ‘98-00, '02, '05; Durango ‘98-01, ‘04-05; Intrepid ‘98-99, ‘03-04; Neon ‘98-99; Ram 1500 (2WD) '99; Ram 1500 (4WD) ‘98-02; Ram Van/Wagon '99;
Stratus Sedan (4-cyl.) ‘98-99; Stratus Sedan (V6) ‘02-03

and

Infiniti

Still want a Dodge product?

That was another factor in my decision but I just miss the days of the muscle cars. I wish the G was more mod friendly...

still thinking about the header install hardships we had eh? you could always go with the blue bottle . I'll find out if Mike Ward is selling his supercharger, it's cheaper than buying a new charger.

Yes, that got me all bummed out.... I like to tinker with the car and when thats done I guess I loose interest... I need to get some new mods to make me happy... Let me think headers, a new rear end with LSD, aero kit and anything else I can think of.

my opinion is since they aren't and probably won't approve a G again i'd use urs till it dies. you'll regret trading it i'm sure in the long run.
