Moving to Hawaii; where are the performance shops?
Alright guys and girls I need some help. I'm going to be moving to Oahu this coming March and just recently bought a 2005 G35 sedan. I need to know if there are any performance shops out there that sell parts for the G and that are reasonable. Parts such as intake, Stillen exhaust, Motordyne spacer, Infinti's OEM front spoiler, so on and so forth. A friend of mine here in GA is telling me to buy all my parts here first to avoid a high shipping cost. Please give me some advise. Thanks a lot, Chris.
Listen to your friend.
Shipping is pretty much all 2nd day air to Hawaii.
You can ship ground and throw the stuff either in your car or on a barge with your other stuff. That is definitely the cheaper option than ordering later.
Hawaii isn't really big enough to support shops that will stock items exclusively for the G. Almost everything I've ever bought for my G has been bought directly from the mainland since I don't want to pay a middleman money to bring stuff in that I can get cheaper than him.

There are a few places that will help you out.
MunkyWurks, Sonics and, Endless Garage are my top 3 shops.
Some shops will give you a better deal with parts, there is a waiting period but shipping cost are not going to be rediculous. There are some things that are definetly cheaper...and guys like MunkyWurks can get you hard to find stuff whereas some mainland shops dont know what you're talking about.

So, what would you get here and what would you get there?
My mod list is as follows:
1)Stillen exhaust
2)Stillen CAI w/350Z tube
3)Stillen headers
4)Kinetix high-flow cats
5)Motordyne 5/16" spacer or Kinetix plenum
6)Gordgee's GroundingGear
7)Infiniti Aero front lip kit
8)Infiniti splash guards (front/rear)
9)Clear side markers
10)Aluminum pedals
11)Tein H-tech springs
And I think that's it. Anyway, I did a search on Grubbs on getting the lip kit, splash gaurds, clear markers, and aluminum pedals. To GA the shipping was $58, but to HI it was $248. That's a huge difference. Now, I really am considering getting everything now, besides waiting. My only real problem is simple that I didn't plan on getting all these parts right now. I wanted to spread over a little bit. Like a year or two.

for all those parts, get them while you're in the states NOW! you could get the front lip, and h techs here though. no one here stocks any stillen parts. most of hawaii is geared more towards parts from the land of the rising sun (JDM). you can get grounding gear here, as well as a better voltage pack too.

Well, I appreciate the heads up guys on shipment fee's and everything. I did a rough estimate last night and it looks like everything to GA would cost me near $4500, but to HI it would cost me near $5300. That's a big increase. Only problem is, I really don't want to spend all that money right away.
I guess, I wouldn't be so hesitant if I knew my wife was going to have a guaranteed job when we arrived over there. Unfortunately, I'll definitely have a job seeing that I'm in the Army, but she'll have to find one. Maybe you guys and girls can help me out. Here in GA she's been a loan officer, with 9 years experience working closing on all types of loans from personal, auto, and home. Now, I've heard that being that she's a so called white girl with blonde hair and such that she may have a hard time finding a job. Now, before anyone gets upset and thinks I'm saying that Hawiians are prejudice; I'm not in anyway shape or form. I'm just asking, because it's what I've heard. Thanks for any help you guys can give me and please understand that I'm implying anything about the local population in Hawaii, just asking. Thanks again and sorry if I offended anyone.

Wait a second, you're white. sh*t, nevermind then. Stay in the mainland.
Haha, just kidding man. There are some places where she would have a harder time finding a job than others, mostly because of the nepotism around here, not so much racism. For the most part, she should have absolutely no problem finding a job when she gets here, esp. with her experience.
As for the shipping, if you can't buy all the stuff now, then just go and get the bulk items like your exhaust parts. The ones with the lower shipping costs can be purchased here for a lesser premium. I just went to Infiniti yesterday, they wanted to charge me $471 for the front lip. Then the guy was very rude because i called it a lip and not a front chin spoiler. BTW we only have one dealership, and it ain't the best.

Thanks for the links on the jobs.
Yes, I am white....haha. Anyway, good news, the wife says get the damn parts now, so we don't have to pay so much in shipping cost. Most likely, I'm going to buy everything and then some. Let the modding begin. Woot!!

The only thing about your wife getting a job: Hawaii has one of the highest cost of living, and yet the wages here are near the middle, if not lower end of the spectrum. The good thing for you, being in the military, is that the BAH and COLA rates just went up drastically, because the price of rent and house prices went up pretty high as well.
If you can afford to buy a house/condo, do it. If not, get base housing, because the price of rent out here is huge.
Good luck
Dave

trust me...shipping isnt too bad if you know your shops and you stay dedicated to them. I bought my Silk Section RM/A8 coilovers from MunkyWurks, at a sponsorsed price, regular price is about $1700...shipping from Japan was about $80
Like I said before, there is a wait...like most parts coming from Japan, it's between 2-6 months.
Right now Hawaii probably has the lowest unemployment rate in the US. I don't think that she'll have a problem getting a job with her experience. The pay not be what she's used to, but it's a worker's market right now.
Best of luck.
Best of luck.
