Got my K&N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Re: Got my K&N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Tyler, K&N is located in OC of California.
My question is, does it sit in exactly the same place as the Injen intake? Is the only main difference the little screen which is supposed to help block out water? I want a CAI but I'm just hesitant about the water locking. Did K&N have anything to say abuot that or was that not even a concern for some of you?

Hey SoCalMMR, can you please post a few more pics. I would be interested in seeing the filter itself as well as this water screen you are referring to. Thanks!

Re: Got my K&N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
I called K&N and spoke to Danny too.
OK, so this is what I learned. They are not available. The silk pouch socal was referring to is the drycharger, it's basically silkscreen treated with oil. There's a precharger too, that's just dry silk screen, helps protect the filter and acts kidn of like a prefilter for large elements. But he drycharger, silkscreen with oil, is supposed to completely block out the water, unless teh filter is submerged.
Danny also stated one point, he said becuase it's an oil based filter, you don't really have to worry too much about water gettnig through. That's interesting, never heard of that one. I guess it makes sense, I was thinking more along thes lines of the silk screen with relatively small points of passage, that even if it were to be sucked through taht it would be small enough to evaporate by the time it was sucked into the chambers.
Anyone have experience with these drychargers? I'm probably going to get mine later this week.

Re: Got my K&N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Hey guys, okay. Sorry, for being away, as I know some have had some questions, but I live in an area of Southern California that was evacuated, yet was safe, from the fires, so in general, I have not really been online much recently.
That being said....
I do have a picture of what the filter looks like installed, but not from during installation, I shot a pic of what it looks like when it's done, & the ironic part is, since the "pouch" is BLACK, you almost can't even tell it's there, BUT there is a HUGE K & N filter element on it (you can see the trademark K & N red color faintly through the pouch). I will try to attach the pic of the outside of the bumper shot, showing what the final fit look of the K & N CAI intake is, but again, it's almost so hard to see, it's not very exciting, which is why I did not originally post it, but I certainly understand the curiosity to see what it looks like.. I was so close you can even see BUG splatter!!! Hahahahahaha!!!
Now, on the water topic, the thing to keep in mind is, we have a spout, that LITERALLY goes to the front air grille in the bumper, so therein does pose a potential for water to possibly get in. I did have a lengthy talk with the guy who did the actual install of the kit on my car, while he was installing it, which gave us just under a couple of hours together to talk. I did ask very intent questions about the water issue. The pouch as I call it, or the DryCharger, is supposed to be able to reject all reasonable rain / water scenarios, right up to the point of the entire area of the font bumper being submerged in water, then you have essentially "Dunked" the filter right into a pool of water, in that case water WILL find a way in. Also, you are supposed to be able to go around 50k miles between filter cleanings on a K & N filter, so you should not have to service the thing for a long time, or at least a lot of miles...... At any rate, so the DryCharger is "SUPPOSED" to really help resolve the CAI water issue. So far I have had no problems with water, but the rains are also only just now starting to fall here in LA. But I will say this (at the risk of insulting anyones knowledge, we'll just chalk this up to being for someone new), K & N has alway been a filter company, that's what they are known for. They have a different concept for filter technology, which is why their product is distinctly different that let's say the factory filter that is installed when you buy the car.
A factory filter is of the paper variety, it's sort of like corrigated, vaccum bag paper, it flows air, & trys to trap dust. They are highly dense, & have a LOT of surface area, which, when related to air flow volume, is actually a point of restriction.
K & N developed a technology that instead uses a thin cotton gause mesh, that is like, POWER sandwhiched between two sheets of a strong wire mesh, bent into an accordian type of shape. Then you spray the filter with a red "Oil" & enough of it that you have a proper area of coverage without too much oil, or it can clog early. The advantage is, you do have a sticky surface area, but it's not all one surface, it's a combinattion of wire, gauze, & oil, each doing certain tasks, & they are actually really good at trapping dust, & just not clogging, sort of like those Fantom vacs vs a regular bag vac. Anyway, it yeilds a filter that has dyno & airflow tested increases, though sometimes modest, most drop in OEM K & N filters will give you about 3 hp gain on a dyno, if that. On my G, with a stock fit K & N in the factory box, I averaged a gain of about 5 (posted on this site back in Dec 02), which had a peak of about 7/8 hp gain on the dyno. So even 5 is a pretty good # for just that drop in. It's less restriction on air flow & the engine is more effective. Filter is serviced at about 50,000 miles by soaking in a K & N cleaning solution, then sun drying, then re-spraying with the oil, & you can go another 50,000 miles, & they give a lifetime warraty on their filters.
So these guys have been doing this for a long time, which is why they are really reputable to begin with.
I really had a lot of fun & was happy to let them use my car. They are HIGHLY professional, honest people. My experience in this whole process has been great.
I LOVE the way my car sounds, I swear I will tell you, it's almost too loud. Intake & exhaust both sound VERY different now.
They have a great system put together in this kit. I think their handling of the MAF sensor is the most elegant solution I have seen on a CAI, especially compared to that plastic, clamp, thingy I have seen on another kit, where I think you have use a plastic ring from the factory instake as well to marry with their part.......... This is a presision cut, billited aluminum component (MAF) port, that is cleanly welded to the intake tube. The intake I think is one of the highest quality CAI's I have seen yet. They may have taken their time with this kit, but the overall design is the best I have seen. I'll finish the history lesson with this thought.
The unit is specifially designed to act as both a CAI & a WAI (Cold/Warm Air Intake), if you remove the joint connector after the MAF sensor, you can simply just put the flter on that end of the pipe, & it would be just about where the factory filter would be under the hood, up in the engine compartment, & unless you get into water that goes up to just about the top of the hoodline (which would hit the factory unit as well), you have nothing to worry about, so the CAI is designed to work 2 part, as a fit CAI, & a WAI or sometimes called short air instake or something, if you want to remove the bottom section of intake pipe.
Other than the clamps at the joint, & the throttle body & filter, the whole system only has two (2) mount points to locations in the engine compartment, so it's very elegant & clean.
It really woke my coupe up, without question, & for a mod that can be reversed (with some effort) if necessary, I think it's a a great modification. I think a CAI is the best bang for the buck, wihtout spending thousands for an SC or turbo...
I'm sorry this is long guys, I was just trying to clearly aswer all of the questions for me, both in posts & PM's. I hope this helps answer some questions. I am not sure about the ship date, but it's not far off that I know of...
A LOT more heads turn now if one plays with the gears & the gas pedal right...

Socalmmr, Thanks for posting bro. I'm glad you're back at home after the evac. Judgeing by the news, it was a very tense and dangerous time down there during those fires.
The CAI is cool, I'm just waiting for my local dealer to get one in.
Take care bro

Re: Got my K&N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Hey all. Just as an FYI I got a call from my friend who is one of the engineers over at K & N. He let me know that these kits are officially available online, through one of their distribution channels.
www.4filters.com
Just click on Typhoon, & then nav through the Yr/Make/Model pop-up menu's to get to the kits.
They will go for $237.25 US (Cold Air Intake, they do also have the SR-Short Ram intake) & I believe he said if you order from that site, there is free shipping, but don't hold me to that... (Also I do not know if that is US only, etc as far as no shipping costs).......
Just wanted to post this info for everyone as he just called me....
Regards.

Re: Got my K&N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Just ordered mine direct from K/N, should have it next week. Paid $293 for the polished kit. Could have found it cheaper, but who cares. I was going to get the Stillen/Z-Tube combo, but for the same price the K/N is WAY better. Can't wait to hear it at redline. Finally a flow-matched "system" up to the Plenum that has been engineered to work together and integrate the MAS. Pre-Ordered the Stillen dual exhaust for the sedan, Matt said early next year for delivery. With the intake and exhaust, should see some nice torque gains, especially at the low end. My main complaint about the sedan, lardass off the line.
Re: Got my K&N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Hey karlhungus.....
Well, I must say, owning a Coupe & of course, now a Coupe with that K & N CAI, there is a HUGE diff between the Coupe & Sedan in handling & take off. (Sedans as service loan cars are my primary sedan experience).....
With this CAI installed, if I start from out of the gate at a red, & punch it, take the car to redline, then upshift, I nearly have to upshift again into 3rd as the r's are so tight, it's danred near readline again by the time it's drop into 2nd (keeping it at WOT), & even with VDC on, when I make that 1st to 2nd shift, she REALLY wants to chirp, & that's pretty impressive for a 5/AT...
