Got my K&N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Hey all...
Well, I know they were delayed, but I promised when I got my K&N CAI installed by K&N, I would post some pics of what it looks like. My car is Brilliant Silver & they gave me a kit to match it, looks REAL nice. (For those that are new, I let them use my Coupe to prototype this kit back in Dec. & posted info about it). I would have had this done sooner, but was waiting as Riverside is far from where I live, but it's IS on the way to Palm Springs... Hehehehhehe!!
Anyhoo, I will attach as many pics as I can. I will say from an impression standpoint, I can not believe how much louder my car is, it does NOT sound like the same vehicle, it's really only at WOT, but DAMM!!! Def has more butt kick to it as well. If I am on the freeway, moving through traffic, jump from auto, to let's say 3'rd, the car just lunges into that gear, howls like mad & probably scares a few people in the process. I have noticed it does idle a little rough, & I did do the ECU reset & idle air flow procedures, which did do something, but I have had no problems as of yet. I drove from Riverside to Palm Springs, then all around PS for several days, then from PS back to LA. If the ECU adapts & de-tunes the mod, I can not detect it, the car does have more pull, & reacts quicker to gear / gas (WOT) actions.. I will say again though, if some people want a more quiet car, this will make it sound insane....

Re: Got my K & N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Well, I tried to attach a pic, but it did not take, I am going to reduce it & try again.. If not I will maybe post a link & do something on ImageStation.. Sorry guys if this does not work on this next attempt....

Great, it worked, I will post one more of the down pipe, which does place the filter element down into the front grill of the bumper, though that is difficult to see....

Re: Got my K & N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Hahahahhaa, not sure about the buy back, I had a drop in OEM fit K & N in there as well... My understanding is this from talking to the guys down there on Friday. Originally they had an internal debate about which filter element they were going to use on this kit, & that delayed them getting it out, though the CAI's were done. They should be available now or, in the coming week or so, as I am sure it will take time for some dealers to obtain / stock the item...
Also, I believe they are making a Short Air intake, which does not have the second extension arm, & will leave the filter up in the engine compartment, though I am not 100% sure about that. Also, for those that may have inclement weather problems, they have added some kind of filter "cover" that adds a layer of water protection, without restricting air flow very much, & it can be removed (I had them leave it on for my install). Also, you can, if your weather is REALLY bad, remove the second down pipe, & put the filter on the end of the 1st pipe, which would make it a WAI (Warm Air Intake) as the filter would now be in the engine compartment, but it would be safe for severe wet weather applications. So the unit is modular & adaptable based on weather...
Hope that helps.....

Also, I want to add, this particular application is on a Coupe, I am NOT sure if the kit is identicle for a Sedan, since they are different body's there could be some differences (mounting points, etc....), but don't take my word on that, call K & N to find out & maybe add to this thread if you do, as I am not sure about the Coupe / Sedan question....

Re: Got my K & N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Thanks Randy, What a relief this kit has finally been released. I look forward to more pics especially of the filter area down by the bumper.
This kit looks very similar to the Injen at first glance.
Glad to hear you can feel it in the 'butt dyno', and that the ECU doesn't negate the h/p gains. That's very encouraging.
Thanks bro

Re: Got my K & N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Randy, I phoned K&N and spoke to Danny, who explained that the Coupe kit is still "being worked on" and will make it's debut "in about a month".
If you hear anything more in the meantime, let us know.
Thanks

Yes, they REALLY did a phenominal job on the design of this. The tube is, like our cars, painted with the metallic paint, then it is later clear coated. The air flow sensor has an area that was custom designed into the tube for it. Everything is tight & clean. The mount points are easy to get to, but also very well obscured from view....

Re: Got my K & N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Not sure of the price. My understanding of the HP gains for the previous question is around 12 +/-. I saw early #'s as high as 14, & I do know that when dyno'd @ K&N last year, we also tested from the stock intake just a drop in OEM fit K&N & that gave 5.

Re: Got my K & N CAI installed @ K&N Friday
Correct, & another nice item for the K&N kit, aside from the fact that they have created a built in mount point for the air sensor (read, you do not have to frankenstein parts like you do on the injen from the factory intake), they also have a specially designed filter cover, it looks sort of like a silk pouch. Anyway, that helps protect the engine further, it also further extends the life of the filter media, & it is designed to help reject water & not restrict airflow, so it can help in all but like flooded water situations.. Very elegant fine touches. The unit was painted to match the car as well as a clear coat in a multi step process. Neoprene, not rubber joint connects, along with really nice, high quality hex head clamps... I have been askes in PM's to supply some more pictures of the filter, clamps, etc... So I will try to work on that shortly, but am also in the middle of these California fires, near Simi, so may have to evacuate, so the fun stuff is at a minimum for the moment....
