Borla Cat-Back Exhaust self install: questions?

I should get my Borla this week. I was planning to put it in myself using ramps.

Is there a good walkthrough or FAQ on this?
Is there anything I should know? Tricky spots? Things to watch out for?
How long should I expect?
Is this something I can do myself, or should I have help?

I appreciate all the help / feedback (in advance).

Thanks!

Joshua

Here is a write-up on a 350z. It is basically the same installation - http://www.zchickz.com/borla2.htm.

There are a lot of pieces, so make sure you have a clamp fitted over each section before putting together. If you are doing it by yourself on ramps, I would say 2-3 hours. A second person - even if they don't do anything else - really comes in handy when removing the old muffler section and putting the new one on. It is hard to support the weight of the muffler and remove it from the rubber hangers at the same time. The rubber hangers can be a real PITA. However, it is not necessary to remove any of them if you lube them up and pull really hard.

It really is rather straight-forward. If you like to do things yourself, then go for it. Some of the nuts are on really tight. The ones connecting the Y pipe to the cats were especially tight. The easiest way to get to these is from the side of the car, you won't have hardly any room that close to the front of the car with the rear on the ramps.

Re: Borla Cat-Back Exhaust self install: questions?

the above advice is excellent , If you get a chance pre soak the bolts you are removing with WD40 or another acceptable rust inhibitor, it helps!! and when putting back toghether Silver anti seize compund is a good idea, Your pedal for the parking brake should be there also by the week end so if you can spare a half minute in between your project install it, 8ft pounds ( =a light pull) is all the bolt needsto be secure.LOL
Good luck and let us know how your exhaust turns out.

Re: Borla Cat-Back Exhaust self install: questions?

make sure you get some sort of short breaker bar, we only had a long one, and that doesnt work when you are on ramps, not enough clearance to break the bolts loose

the bolts that connect the cats to the Y pipe are a PAIN IN THE NECK to loosen. My friend ended up holding the socket wrench in place while i gathered all my energy and Kicked the wrench about 8 times to finally break the bolts loose. Hey it worked.

Expect a good 2 to 3 hours for complete install.
It took us 3 hours but thats because it was raining and the power was out...so we had to do it outdoors.... haha....dedication.

Re: Borla Cat-Back Exhaust self install: questions?

Seriously, this was my first time using the new set of air tools I got last Christmas. An impact wrench does wonders on the bolts from the cats. I wasn't experienced with the wrench though, and accidentally stripped one nut round. I had to cut it off with an air-grinder, but other than that, the install was really easy, and I did it solo with just some ramps. Getting the old exhaust off is 100% the hard part. The rubber hangers slide off super easy if you just lube them up really good with WD-40. I wouldn't even try to do the install without some of that stuff.

When you get everything loose fitted, make sure you check your alignment on the exhaust tips. Mine were really crooked, and needed continual adjustment as I tightened everything up. Once I got it all tight, the tips stayed lined up great, but just check for it.

Installed and in love...

So the system is installed and I LOVE it.

After reading your comments and others from the boards, I decided to find a lift I could put the car on to do the work. After some searching, I found a place called California Muffler in canoga park. The owner Jon was very cool, and after chatting with him on the phone I decided just to let him have a go at installing it. He had done several Borla systems, and was eager to work on the G. He had a 2004 Z06 up on the lift when I got there...twin turbos..WOW.

It took Jon about 30 minutes to do the full install. he mentioned that this was the best fitting Borla system he had worked on. Ha said he has had to heat, bend, cut previous systems to make them fit, but mine went on straight from the box without any hiccups.

I tired to take pictures but my camera battery died about 2 shots in...damn technology

Anyway, I love the Borla...awesome sound, not too loud, just throaty...sounds like ther is a little something special under the hood. I'm very impressed...and thanks for tyhe tips.

Re: Installed and in love...

Dude, did you notice any hp increases (using the ole' the butt dyno method)? I am thinking of this for next mod and am eagerly scouring forums for honest opinions. Thx!

Re: Installed and in love...

I haven't dyno'd but it does feel like there is something extra there for sure. The guy at the shop estimated that I would get toward the higher range of the expected HP increase...but I haven't tested yet.. Overall I love it. Worth every dime of the purchase and install.

Re: Installed and in love...

Hey Guys! I just got my Borla headers and exhaust installed last week. I really like it too. But there's a little rattling that happens right around 1000 -1300 rpm. It's so annoying. Any of you guys have the same problem? Any ideas? I'm thinking of lifting it and then checking to see what it's hitting against. But just at that specific RPM range, the exhaust shakes a little and I guess it's enough to rattle against the body. Any idea guys?
