K&N CAI no bypass valve???
Just called K&N to ask about the typhoon CAI 69-7080 for our "G's" and asked about a bypass valve, they said it is not needed since it is a oil based filter, Or unless I submerge the filter when driving. With as low as these sit in the front of our cars am I wrong to think a fairly deep puddle could cause problems? Or is the oil based filter good enough to repel any "splash-up's" that could occur?.
Input please... Thanks
Peace

yeah i know hydrolocking is scary but its not as big of a problem as people make it sound. unless the entire filter is under water u are not going to suck water in. the oil on the K&N is suppost to repell the water and i am sure it does. I would not be concered with it unless u are playing on forging rivers with the G. my thoughts are if its that bad then u probaly shouldnt be driving and if u have to u can always detatch the intake. the K&N can be converted to be a WAI

Re: K&N CAI no bypass valve???
Hey Triji, I called and that's exactly what he told m too. But all the CAI are oiled based filters. But I'm sure the drycharger and the filter for the most part dispells most of the water.
So, what I gathered so far was, (1) the filter is oil based, so it'll only allow minimal water throug, (2) the drycharger will not allow most of the water to go through, (3) the plenum and CAI piping shold be plenty hot that by the time small amounts of moisture get through, it'll easily evaporte, (4) if the drycharger and filter fail in filtering out the water the small amounts that do pass in will already split into very small droplets by the filter and drycharger that they will evaporate even more easily.
BUT, none of this matters if you dip the filter into water! So, I don't know, I'm still debating it myself. Although with the install, I'm kind of torn. Hope that helped.

Re: K&N CAI no bypass valve. Prob solved...
Well I did a little bit of thinking and a cpl of phone calls around to some of the shops today and came to this conclusion. I am no way gonna put a CAI on my baby without a bypass vavle... With that said I ordered my K&N Typhoon 69-7080TB "blue" and I am gonna retro fit it with a AeM bypass valve. Problem solved : ) ... I got the CAI for 229 and they are gonna throw the bypass valve in for 30 bucks, Install is gonna run me 35 bucks. At the same time they are gonna install a hyper grounding kit for 120 bucks with no charge for the install on that. All in all I think I made out pretty good on that. By the time I am done my engine bay is gonna be sparkln blue. Got alot of ideas for a paint scheme in there as well. Hope to get a Dig camera for X-mass so I can start poppn pictures.

Re: K&N CAI no bypass valve. Prob solved...
Can never have too much protection, but having done through 1 full winter and 1/2 way thru another - I am 100% fine that with the Injen CAI and the K&N drywrap on there - no water gets in unless you drive through water that is above the level of your door so you submerge the filter. In that case - any problems with anything on the car, brakes, electrical, etc... are really the driver's fault anyway. I'm just surprised no one has worried about the STOCK intake. After all, with the opening directly on top and the other one on the side, you would very easily have cold & wet air/rain ducted in during a heavy storm, or going through a car wash, and since the stock filter is dry only, it could get waterlogged. Seems funny to me that with all the paranoia over a bypass, no one with a stock set-up has ever worried about that. Oh well. To each his own. A bypass is like insurance, you never need it till you need it and then its too late. Maybe that is why Nismo includes it. But I really do think unless you live in a very wet area and do a lot of driving in deep water (more than 3" - 4" deep) you are probably just buying peace of mind more than anything. Sort of like taking your car to the dealer for oil changes even though you can do it yourself for less.

The stock intake is such a massive labyrinth of resonators, boxes, and tubes, it would be incredibly rare, if ever, to get any water all the way to the throttle body. The straight tube systems are clearly far higher risk. Here's a pic of the stock system, more are in the DIY for the 350Z performance intake in my sig:
