Injen CAI Question Concerning HydroLocking
I recently purchased a Injen Cold Air Intake(part#RD1992P) for my G35 coupe 6speed. I realized that the intake filter sits at the bottom of the bumber and is pretty vulnerable to water. I was wondering If I could buy the Injen Heat Shield thats Half a circle and sits on the filter. I wuz wondering If i could use the shield to guard the Filter from Splashing of Water. I know it wont prevent it from suckin up water if im in a puddle but I wuz wondering if it would fit in the bumber and IF theres enough room to place it there

Re: Injen CAI Question Concerning HydroLocking
Get a AeM bypass valve and your problems are solved. I have a K&N Typhoon CAI and had a bypass valse installed because of those very concerns. You can see the bypass valve installed here. It is the foam piece sitting between the to alum halves of the intake pipe.

Re: Injen CAI Question Concerning HydroLocking
It doesn't sound stock and it only kicks in if there is a major difference in the pressure at the filter end so no loss of horsepower.

Re: Injen CAI Question Concerning HydroLocking
Awesome, thanks for the info Triji!
My measurements of the Nismo CAI included bypass show it doesn't do anything unless the filter is majorly blocked, which is great. Unless it's submerged or considerably covered, the bypass is ignored.
Good to know the AEM fits with the Injen. Two reported cases of dead engines due to water intake on the Injen are enough.

Re: Injen CAI Question Concerning HydroLocking
there is absolutely no difference to Hp with the bypass valve installed at all. It does not open until there is a obstruction to the filter as mentioned above. The sound does not change one iota. My car sounds incredibly mean and loud above 4000 rpms. I love the way it roars and I feel it in the butt dyno once she gets going. The only thing I notice below 3500 rpms is that the low end torque is not quite what I would like. I think since above 3500 rpms she just takes off now that the low end just feels sluggish. I know she is faster than stock with the CAI so it is all in my head.

Re: Injen CAI Question Concerning HydroLocking
Beautiful engine color. I have the blue injen CAI and was wondering where you bought your blue grounding wires? Did you paint the other plastic parts yourself?

Re: Injen CAI Question Concerning HydroLocking
Thank you, I got the grounding wires at a local shop here in Tucson Az, Apex Motorsports. I am pretty sure anywhere you can find grounding wires will have a selection of colors also. As for the paint, yes I did paint it myself with the paints I put in the picture. I put on 2 coats of primer so the paint would stick, 3 coats of paint and then 2 coats of the clear coat. It took about 2.5 hours to mask off the areas with masking tape and the Infiniti emblem comes off if you heat the back side of the cover with a hair drier for about 10 mins prying with a very thin knife very carefully. Make sure when you paint to stay far enough away from the cover as to not get any runs in it at all. This is a case of less is more.

Re: Injen CAI Question Concerning HydroLocking
Well the heatshield, which I have as well but decided not to put on, will probably keep the filter slightly cleaner under normal conditions, may prevent a little splashing, but if hydrolocking is your main concern, you shouldn't have any problems with or without that shield. Splashing will in no way cause your engine to hydrolock. As mentioned in many other posts, in order for this to even happen, you must have your whole filter submerged. I remember there used to be this video of an NSX w/ clear intake piping routed into an aquarium of water showing how submerging the filter partially did not create enough vacuum pressure to suck up water into the engine. If I could only find it.
If water is deep enough to hydrolock your motor...you honestly shouldn't be driving in those conditions period.
This is straight from AEM's Website:
Question
Will the AEM Bypass Valve cause a loss of power?
Answer
The bypass valve may cause a slight loss in power due to the interrupted wall section created by the internal shape of the valve. In dyno testing we have found that the power loss is minimal. The bypass valve offers great security against hydro locking the engine in rainy conditions. If maximum power is the requirement, we suggest that the bypass valve be used in the rainy season and when racing use a coupler hose to make a smooth section where the bypass valve goes.
