Exhaust Trick...

lol get off his back everyone he was just telling everyone bout his experience..i really doubt he wrote this so that people would just flame him like the olympic torch. I mean, let him be, his question was as to WHY backfiring after turnin off and on the car happens, not "ignore my question and add your smartass remark on how stupid this is." let him decide if it's stupid or not....

It definitely is dangerous, because you lose your power steering when you kill the motor and possibly the brake assist... but I can appreciate interesting little "hacks" like that at least being found. I wouldn't suggest people go out and try this little trick though. Backfires are not good for your catalytic converters or 0xygen sensors, and with a stock exhaust are indicative of the car not running properly(probably too rich, which causes problems with converters and 02 sensors in itself). If something unexpected happened while the car was off, you could be in a situation where you wouldn't be in full control of the vehicle... and who knows what other types of potential hidden errors could happen to the system aside from the blatantly obvious backfires.

Ok. I don't know what happend. I almost crashed. I turned the key to "off" on drive,After I did that, I lost all power, including brakes and steering. I had to coast the car on the side of the road, but at 30mph and no steering, I almost ran into a car that was behind me. I got the car to stop with the e-brake in the middle of the street, where i had to put the car into "P" pull out the key, and restart the car. If you have a 5AT, don't do this. . . BTW, no backfire after the incident.

ive done this before when my tire pressure light kept going off for no reason...dude you have to put it in neutral..then turn the engine off..then turn it on then shift back into Drive...what you did was pretty damn stupid

Sounds like the injectors either are still firing or the ecu goes into start mode when you start the car again. Either way, it sounds like you are running the car rich and the backfire is the exhaust lighting the mix inside the cats. Good way to ruin the cats by running the rich or breaking the honeycomb apart.
