Re: Installed Stillen Cat-back this morning...

FYI, my Stillen exhaust has mellowed out quite nicely. Love the power... love the sound!

Re: Installed Stillen Cat-back this morning...

What actually causes the exhaust note to mellow? If I am Stillen, why wouldn't I "pre-mellow" all new exhaust systems so they don't scare the newbies so bad?

Re: Installed Stillen Cat-back this morning...

I've had mine on for over a month now and really didnt notice any mellowing at all. This is a performance exhaust and it sounds like it. You are taking a step away from luxury and a step towards performance with the Stillen. I would think that Stillen could develop a quieter version with longer resonators in the future. I love the new sound, but some people will miss the pure quiet of the stock system. 20 extra ponies cant be ignored though.

Re: Installed Stillen Cat-back this morning...

Is the stillen sedan exhaust louder then the stillen coup exhaust? Or are we sedan owners just used to our super quiet stock exhaust which might make some of us feel the stillen sedan exhaust is really loud until we get used to it?

Good question..I'm still deciding on Nismo or Stillen and the dB at normal driving is a major factor. I'd give up a few hp for less noise.

Re: Installed Stillen Cat-back this morning...

Take a look at Borla Dual sys. It is quiter, but they ALL have
the stop light in traffic 0 to 40mph low tone noise that my wife
say's is "to loud for a car of this refinement and cost". Like
anyone with a new dual exh. sys. the performance is worth
a LITTLE sound change, and they ALL mellow slightly with
time. BTW,if you install a cai (intake sys.) that added sound
is heared mostly in the cabin, that will bring a smile to your
face. Check other threads, there are even sound bits to hear.
Borla is somewhat quiter.
Good Luck,
Bob

Re: Installed Stillen Cat-back this morning...

Here's some info I got from DaveO about all the exhausts....all compared to stock.
Borla = 8.2 Hp - 2.7 ft/lbs torque (peak values)
A top end system. Little HP increase until the 5600 rpm to 6500 rpm range. Lost HP & torque below 1800 rpm. 60mm (Article error - actually 58mm) pipe. Weighs 52lbs. 1 million mile warranty. Installation - Hard (18 pieces). Idle db - 88 > 3000rpm db - 92

5Zigen = (-3.4) Hp - .02 ft/lbs torque (peak values)
Lost Hp, no real torque gain. Most expensive. Loudest. 58mm pipe. Lightest @ 25lbs. 1 year Warranty. Installation - Medium. Idle db - 87 > 3000rpm db - 105

Stillen = 8.1 Hp - 7.3 ft/lbs torque (peak values)
Hp and torque increase starting at 3000 rpm to redline. Lost a little HP & torque below 1800 rpm. 60mm pipe. 74lbs - 10lbs heavier than the stock system. Lifetime Limited Warranty. Installation - Easy. Idle db - 84 > 3000rpm db - 93

Injen = 7.6 Hp - 5.1 ft/lbs torque (peak values)
Small torque loss at 2800 rpm. Torque gain starts at 3300 rpm. Small Hp increase starts at 3300 rpm, max Hp from 5800 rpm to redline. Major loss in Hp and torque below 2200 rpm. 49lbs. 1 year Warranty. Installation – Easy. Idle db - 83 > 3000rpm db - 99

Nismo = 6.3 Hp - 4.5 ft/lbs torque (peak values)
Torque increase starting at 3000 rpm. HP increase 4800 rpm to redline. No power losses below 1800 rpm. 54lbs. 3 years, 36K miles if installed by Nissan dealer. Installation - Easy. Idle db - 84 > 3000rpm db - 95
Nissan - Idle db - 87 > 3000rpm db - 89

Based on those numbers, I think the Nismo provides me with good hp gain and no drop off in performance below 1800rpm. But that's just my opinion. I know the Stillen is nice but for ~300 more I'm not sure it's worth it. The Borla doesn't seem like it will work for me due to all the pieces and adjustments that I have heard people having to make.

Any information about the Fujitsubo Exhaust System? I heard they actually make the one for NISMO.

Great comparison for coupe exhausts. I'd like to see the same for the sedan. I would also like to know how the sedan stillen compares to the coupe or 350z stock exhaust.

Re: Installed Stillen Cat-back this morning...

I've had the system on for a couple/few weeks now, and I have to admit the exhaust note seems to have mellowed. I've decided the system does *not* drone. It just has a different exhaust note than stock. I have not had any problems with vibration/resonance.

I performed the recommended ecu resets. The engine runs real smooth. The power gain is real. The exhaust note at WOT is intoxicating. When I plan to do a little spirited driving, I turn off the stereo so I can hear the exhaust. When I'm cruising, I can listen to the stereo unencumbered by a loud exhaust note. I have the best of both worlds.

At first, I was worried about getting sideways glances from the folks at work, since the exhaust is somewhat louder than stock. Actually, the reverse has happened: I've actually had co-workers approach me to say they have not noticed before, but they really like the sound of my engine!

I like it. I really like it.
