Compression Test

Hey Guys,

I am looking at buying a LR G coupe this week and want to perform a compression test before purchasing it.

Does anyone know what the factory compression numbers are suppose to be?

Cheers

If you don't know the # just make sure the # are close to each other on all 6 then you will be fine.

why would you do a compression test on a new car? besides its all in the break in period.... if you don't break it in you'll definitely be asking for trouble

Factory new - 140's to 160's...a few years old with miles, should be in the 130's I would think.

Here ya' go, this is from Nissan/Infiniti:

Compression pressure kPa (kg/cm2, psi)/300 rpm

Standard 1,275 (13.0, 185)

Minimum 981 (10.0, 142)

Differential limit between cylinders 98 (1.0, 14)

Here's a link showing how to do it:

Hope this helps. And who cares what others are saying about it being a new car. At least you have a baseline and peace of mind. If you can do it also do a leak down test. This requires specialized equipment and an air compressor but it will give you a better idea how the engine and valves are sealing....

Sorry - but it does matter if it is new or not. The ratings posted by 'others' are for a new engine. An extremely used or abused engine, will have lower, potentially much lower, numbers. It's important, because is you get a car with 30,000 miles on it, and the pressure is 30% lower than new, then the car has been abused or there are other issues. On the flip side, you get a car with 60,000 miles on it with pressure ratings of a new engine, then you really have a well taken care of vehicle with a string engine.

These are the things you want to know when buying a used car.

You never know how a car has been driven regardless if its 50 miles or for 50,000 miles.

Thanks for all the help guys. I will post some results when I find the right car.

Cheers.

Not necessarily true - it depends on what you look at, and how good you look.

Um well, just looking at the engine won't reveal much. Unless it's leaking oil all over the place. A hard driven car can be cleaned up pretty good.

A compression test is a good thing to get on any car (newish or not)

A cylinder leak down test would be anther one.

If you are getting this done at a shop, have them run an OBDII for codes and contact the dealer to have the service records brought up for you.

Exactly what I meant - it depends on what you look at and how.
