Hey VQ. I just saw a pic of the Fast Intentions cat back for the Z. It has a muffler looking thing at the Y also. But they claim it's a resonated X pipe. So I'm wondering of the Borla is also. I don't suppose you can look inside your broken borla can and see how the pipes go? Please? hehe

I asked if the muffler in the Y was a X-pipe or not and this is their reply:

Thank you for contacting BORLA PERFORMANCE. This is just a dual in and
dual out muffler. The pipes do not cross or mix inside the muffler.
Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the muffler only to show
more
detail or what the inside looks like. If you have additional questions
regarding Borla exhaust check out our web site www.Borla.com you may
contact me Direct anytime Mon-Fri 8:30-5:00 PST with questions or
concerns

Subject: Borla technical question p/n 140093 G35 sedan

Hi,

I'm a new owner of your Part# 140093 Borla exhaust for
the 2003' G35 Sedan (auto if that matters).

I have a question regarding the 1st portion of the
system that connects to the dual catatylic convertors.
Your system seems to have a large 2 in/ 2 out
muffler. Is this just simply a muffler? Or is some
type of X pipe? Can you give me some details on
exactly what part this is and if you have an exploded
view of it?

Thanks and look foward to your reply.

Interesting. You should consider putting in an cross pipe just aft of "premuffler" and just forward of the resonators. This could serve as an H-pipe. It would be a great way to equalize the exhaust pulse and give a cleaner sound and potentially improve power, fractionally.

I don't think there's enough room for that Dave. Unless I go to two resonators about 1/2 the length or get rid of the pre-muffler and put it there. Ala Stillen.

Although maybe not the most efficent, a H pipe right after the Y resonator might be an easy fix. That is if would do anything.

Find a muffler that has a built in crossover feature? I think the FI exhaust is designed based on this too.

Yup. According to FI, they use a magnaflow resonated x pipe. I couldn't find it on Magnaflow's site though. I've emailed and asked them. I'd sure like to see what's inside this.

Ah found it on the Z site. $150 ish. Said to eliminate rasp and give back some low end torque. The X pipe might be the reason why the Gen 1 stillen dynos great. The Borla doesn't have a X pipe

One of the shorter ss version:

The magnaflow 2 in 2 out muffler has an x pipe built in. You can look it up on Summit Racing, they sell them. Edit: It's a lot cheaper than 150 from Summit Racing.

BTW, by definition a 2 in 2 out muffler equalizes the exhaust but probably not quite as well as one which has an x pipe style core built in. I doubt you would see any difference on the dyno, maybe 5 horsepower.

I agree. But when an exhaust only gives about 10hp, 5hp is quite a bit? I'm also looking to eliminate some drone at the lower rpms.

Thanks for the summit suggestion.

If you get it, make sure it's the 2.5 inch version.

I've been using X/H pipe's on my race car and hot rods for a long time, power-wise I don't know about 5 HP I huess its supposed to scavenge the exhuast form either side and equalize the pressure. But as Summit suggested using it for eliminating resonance at freeway speeds I would have to say this is where you would notice the difference!!! X-pipe are supposed to be better than H-pipes.

From Borla's website, their pipes are 2.25"

T-304 Stainless Steel Cat-Back™ System
Borla Performance Industries is proud to announce the release of two Cat-Back™ systems for the much-touted Infiniti G35 luxury sports cars -- part #140093 for the sedan and part #140057 for the 2-door. Both systems are based on Borla’s incredibly successful program for the 350Z; add a Borla header (part #17221) for the look, sound and feel of total performance. The T-304 aircraft grade stainless steel 2-1/4 ” system splits from the converter into a dual rear exit with large 4” polished, logo embossed tips. Weighing in at more than 20 pounds lighter than the factory system, tests show an exciting 45% increase in flow! Borla’s strong heritage of building high performance exhaust for Nissan models dates back to the early Z cars. Borla’s race-bred technology has been transferred from many years of successful race programs, learning to make it light, make it last and make it perform, making Borla a natural for the Infiniti G35 -- great power, super lightweight while being ultra brawny stainless steel, sexy powerful look and a great strong sound. All you’ve come to expect from Borla, the most winning exhaust in racing. Isn’t it about time you stepped up to Borla?
