do you guys think that its safe to use a z-tube that came from a friends 350z. he just installed cai and is offering to give me his. will there be any drawbacks to this?

This is not safe at all. You better ship it to me so I can safely dispose of it. haha.

sure, it's safe to use in your G. Make sure it's clean.

Re: Z tube's real impact?
Has anyone compared the Z-tube and Pop Charger to K&N Typhoon? I know the Typhoon doesn't have a heat shield, but I was wondering how the numbers compare.

Re: Z tube's real impact?
The difference between the JWT Pop/Z tube combo and a CAI like the NISMO unit would be the resonance tuning the hard piping the NISMO CAI offers. They'll both have about the same intake air temp, due to the nice location of the stock airbox, but the piping resonance will make a difference in power gains between the two modifications. Pipe length and diameter of the CAI would affect the powerband, if there were more CAI options available where you had different ones to choose from...

Re: Z tube's real impact?
G4Teej,

I doubt if there's much difference to be found from an open hood dyno test. The difference should be found under "real world" conditions, especially on a hot day. We all know a cooler intake charge makes more power. IMO, trading the stock cold air system for a higher flow hot air system isn't the way to go.

I went with the Z air duct and Stillen CAI because:
1 - It's a reasonably "stealthy" system. It looks similar to the stock system.
2 - This system is "plastic" and won't transfer underhood heat as efficiently as the metal tubed air intake systems.
3 - The air inlet remains above the grill. The air temperature tends to be much cooler at hood level than at road level. And the chance of hydrolocking the engine is nil.
4 - Power wise, this system is close to the long ram CAIs.

At the time I bought the Stillen CAI, JWT did not offer a heat shield for the G35 Pop Charger. If I were to do it again I'd seriously consider both the JWT and Stillen units. I prefer Stillen's heat shield, but like the Pop Charger's open end filter and price.

Before the flaming starts... I have no argument with those who have different priorities and have made different buying decisions. IMO, there's several good systems available to choose from.

Re: Z tube's real impact?
I agree with DaveO. I prefer the Z tube to CAI and have had various setups in the Z I just traded in two days ago and my new G sedan. Here's the setups I've had:

2004 350z Auto:
Stock Intake
Stock w/ K&N drop in
Nismo CAI
Nismo CAI w/DIY Ram Air
Reset ECU between all changes

And on the G:
Stock
Z-Tube (so far, just got the car 2 days ago)

From my driving impressions, I like the Z tube the best, wish it was just a straight piece however. I can't recall the throttle response with the stock Z intake, but the G definitely feels more responsive on the low end than the Z with the Nismo. I didn't really feel the CAI gave me any hp on the Z. The only dyno I did on the Z was the Nismo w/Ram and came out with 222 rwhp. There were pros/cons to the sound. It was definitely louder, but the hiss around 3500 rpms got annoying after a while. Also the cone filter was extremely dirty after about 7k miles.

Enough of my rambling.

BTW - I know the Z and G are two totally different cars, but maybe this will help someone looking at intakes.

Re: Z tube's real impact?
Another thing I was wondering, has anyone changed the stock airbox from a G35 to the Z airbox? I still have mine leftover from the Z. To me it doesn't look like this would give any gains, I actually like how the air gets to the box in the G better. Just curious.

Re: Z tube's real impact?
this is what the 350z install is all about:

The air box is the air box... the stock air duct will still restrict you G's breathing.

Re: Z tube's real impact?
air box is just an air box when left alone, however, for those interested in getting more air in via the stock airbox without spending any $$, i opened the front end up, literally.....

Re: Z tube's real impact?
airbox is the airbox... meaning that this thread was about 350z tubes. I notice you have a 350z tube on yours and did not do the mod in that referenced post, where the lower "fin" from the stock duct is twisted off, hole sealed and then replaced. With that mod, you would still have the stock "tupperware" on top.

Praztec said he didn't go with the 350z duct (nothing about the air box) because of that mod.

Re: Z tube's real impact?
i didn't do the stock intake tube mod cause i had the z-tube in there for about 2 months now....it's just that when i modded the stock airbox the way i did, the growl became louder....anyhow, i don't wanna hijack the original topic, so for those interested, here you go:

Re: Z tube's real impact?
I also did the stock air box mod, which was a great idea. Still a little hesitant on twisting off the bottom portion of the original G Tube with breaking it. Can you also pop the top off, which I think you’re referring to the Tupperware looking top? Thanks to all…….

Re: Z tube's real impact?
I thought the Z tube is bigger in Dia. than the stock one.
