Exhaust note

Has anyone else noticed when you start the car in the morning in a parking garage or your garage while the engine is going through its warm-up cycle that the exhaust noise (lovely BTW, sounds like a Lambo V10 at idle except not as bassy and no, it's not wishful thinking, just listen to a Lambo V10 during a cold start idle) only comes out from the drivers side and the passenger side only has smoke blowing out of it despite coming from the same muffler?

Just an observation and curious why that is.

That is my reasoning for never switching out the exhaust, not the mention i a new exhaust would just be for looks

a butterfly valve on one side of exhaust stays closed to speed engine warm-up. once proper temperature is reached the valve opens allowing exhaust gas to exit thru both sides of exhaust. been in use for 50 years or so!

Me either. I didn't know the coupe had a butterfly valve like the Sedan.

A butterfly valve in the muffler? I'm going to have to call BS on that one, please educate me on where you found that info.

I have seen a valve like this before the muffler. LIke an extension off one of the header pipes. Normally that extension would have a flex hose that has a valve in it wich lets the hot air reach the throttle body when the car is warming up.

Yeah, but the car has a single exhaust all the way back to the muffler where it goes in and then branches out to both sides. To only hear the noise from the driver side and see some smoke from the passenger side then the valve would have to be inside the muffler to do this. I really doubt there is any such mechanism in the OEM muffler just for this purpose. It probably has more to do with the fact that the driver side is the shorter path out so the sound is louder out that side, while it might be coming from both, your ears pick up the louder side. Thats my theory until someone shows me the butterfly valve in the muffler.

Well I know it's true for a lot of cars. My Volvo (other car) utilizes this exhaust flow and valve to warm the car up. I know because I replaced the valve that releases the opening so hot exhaust can flow in. It's very common.

Yeah i know what you mean! just today when i started it up in my garag this morning the exhaust note is OH SO beautiful sounding. I really like the exhaust note as well and im a lil iffy on changing the exhaust. Buuuuut i got myself a nismo exhaust but havent installed it yet.

I dont mean to be a thread jacker but i notice something.. My friend has an 05 coupe and it had a HKS exhaust on it with test pipes. He was parting out so had stock cats and exhaust again. But we notice comparing our stock exhaust... mine was significantly louder than his by A LOT!

whats the reason for this???
