Need some advice on exhaust systems plz
I have an xo2 system right now and it sound svery good with stock headers/cats. I just recently put in xerd longtube headers and now it sounds absolutely horrible. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what it could be. It's a total nigth and day difference. It went from nice smooth g35 sound to civic sound.
I was thinking a couple different things.. maybe the mufflers are not able to handle the extra pressure(and sound) due to the packing not being sufficient.
Or possibly there is just too much flow in general and I need to switch to a single exhaust such as the JIC?
So my solutuion i thought up were to either just change the mufflers and still use the xo2 piping, or to totally switch exhaust systems.
Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

yea true but I got a steal of a deal on it so i just put em in. I was thinking maybe switching to the JIC single would help it sound better? the single exhaust seems to sound better than the true duals out there.

I have xerd headers(longtube) which replace the headers and cats as well as are equal length.
i'm also considering keeping the xo2 piping in there and just conjoining them at the rear flanges to a single muffler. I would like the mufflers to be interchangeable if possible.
I also had to redo the extension tonight because they were misaligned, but I did that it it sounds somewhat better, however not how I was hoping.
I think I just need to get a single.. any opinion about leaving the true dual piping and joining them at the end?

You need a system designed to handle other mods - one that is designed to work well/properly with casts or headers or testpipes.
In your case - you have not only added headers, but put in straight testpipes (lack of any resonator at the factory cat location). So your going with virtually Zero backpressure, into a system not designed to handle the noise being put through it.
It may sound better without the mid-section resonators, or even without the mufflers. We tested a system, full open, stock manifolds and nothing but straight pipe - drones all to h e l l but didn't rasp really at all.
If you're seriously thinking of further butchering the system up - get some good consultative advice and have the right system designed/augmented etc...your going to spend a bunch of money trying to get a sound you want - and if your not dealing with anyone who really knows these cars, exhaust characteristics, etc....it'll be a long noisy and expensive road.

yeah I kinda figured that this would run into sound problems. would you happen to have any suggestions personally? There is no one here in Hawaii that would have any knowledge of this car. My closest knowledge comes from my s/c 97 maxima. But that was just straight through to a greddy muffler and it sounded good. Im pretty sure though that youre right and its just the mufflers cant handle the sound coming through. Maybe if I upgrade the mufflers?

Also, if you want to stay true dual or not. So do you have a good shop out there with a mandrel bender, or no?
If not - I would REALLY suggest that you just get a different catback. It'll probably make more sense in the long run. Retro-fitting new mufflers to already bent pipes, etc...never really works well.
If you can - you'd want to go with oval mufflers in the back. Using other 'cans' will yield the same, or possibly worse results.
Also - put an X pipe in the front and get rid of of the H pipe.
The least expensive test/upgrade would be to fit in an X-pipe (Magnaflow's are really good) and longer and larger casing resonators up front. The current ones are 8", I believe, with a 2 1/2 or 2 3/4" housing. Try to find a 3 1/2" housing resonator - maybe 14" long as well, to replace them with.
This will be your least expensive way to figure it out.

sounds good. thanks for the info. I guess theres no option at this point but to throw a little money into it and see what happens. I'm also thinking of going single for the sound. I miss the original G35 sound, but I also want it louder. I guess I will have to just explore my options and figure out where I want to throw money first lol.

thanks for all the helpful suggestions. Im sure there is no way to totally eliminate rasp in this situation but Im sure a different exhaust system would help some. also do all the 350z exhaust fit the g35 with just a midpipe extension? might be able to get a deal on either a nismo or JIC Ti single but off a 350z.
