heat shield

hey i want an intake with a heat shield or some type of heat shield that goes up to the inside of the hood so its not sucking in a lot of hot air. I only know that the pop charger has a heat shield but are there any other ones that are better or have a better heat sheid? i dont want to do cold air cuz of the problem with rain and water

The stock airbox sounds like a good choice.

But if you insist on going after market, the Stillen airbox would be the best choice.

AFE just released their system, looks intriquing to me at least, comes in both wet and dry filter setups, $250-$315 depending on where you get it:

^^^ care to explain, seems like a nice put together kit.

I guess if you wanted to be froogle you could just go with the stillen Z tube and filter.

I feel the AFE offers a nice clean look to it in a simple design.

get one and let us know (I'd be interested to see if it even fits... judging from the pick I'd say it doesn’t... but maybe that’s not the actual one for the G... also the filter looks way small, but again maybe the pic isn’t the one for the car... let us know how it turns out.

doesn't look like much of a heat shield after looking at the installation pictures.

Like I've been saying for over 3 years now, the only way to truely shield the filter from the induction of hot air is to completely seal the air filter within an airbox that has induction points from outside the engine area. Basically a stock airbox. Stillen was close, but they failed on the ultimate execution. It's too bad they just didn't take it one step further and make their heat shield a true airbox.

Dave, is it not also true that a sealed airbox will flat filter (stock) will exhibit significantly less pressure drop than a conical filter style (popcharger), in addition to providing lower intake temps?

They have pictures of it installed in the instruction manual, I dont understand why they havent used the same pictures for their webpage (webhost issue?). They also mention that the heat shield area is sealed off when the hood closes, so I guess the rubber gasket at the top comes in contact with the hood.

They also go into detail elsewhere about their filter designs, supposedly they use a deeper pleat design than most which gives them a larger surface area in a more compact filter design. it also looks like it comes with some sort of venturi plate which is visable a little bit in the online intruction manual.

I do know that from the pictures I like the routing path it takes as opposed to some others. it seems to pull it away from the engine and oil stick just a tad more than others.

As much as I like the look of it and the design, I doubt I'll buy it because I got my current setup for free and can make an airbox cheaper than what it would cost to buy the kit anyway (if I ever get around to it).

The installed pictures in the online manual look promising, but I still understand why most would still go with stillen and a z-tube. it is after all at least $100 cheaper than the AFE kit.

I may still be able to give a review of their products because i told my sister in law to get the version for his Civic 4door for his up coming birthday before I even came across the one for the G.

That I do not know. I know there are quite a few cars that do come with airboxes equipped with cone filters. Off the top of my head, I know the S2000, first gen 5.3 V8 Vortecs, and the newer Viper come this way. I've been debating for a while about picking up a used Stillen CAI and adding additional paneling to completely seal the airbox.

According to COBB Tuning, EVERY intake they've tested (Stillen, Injen, JWT, AEM) including their own intake, messes with the A/F ratios to the point that the engine often looses a little power. I've always respected companies with honesty like this. There aren't many out there.

Stillen is probably one of the best. JWT also has a heat shield it does an ok job at keeping the hot engine air from the intake filter. Stock isn't bad either.
