About The old CAI issue

Many people told me that by installing CAI will reduce the millage on gas...but how come it feels like im gaining? because of my driving style? or because something wrong with my nismo CAI?

Re: About The old CAI issue

You are running more efficiently with a CAI...You're introducing cold air, in theory making the engine work less...Heat is, always, the enemy to an engine...The hotter the environment gets, the more friction your engine experiences, the harder it has to work...Lessen the workload, help the engine to breathe better and do its job more efficiently, and you can expect your engine to combust and consume fuel more efficiently...In turn it is entirely feasible and most probable that you ARE experiencing better gas mileage...Most people think, "A CAI is a performance part. A performance part adds power and that means my engine will be thirstier and burn more fuel. That will lower my gas mileage"...A CAI is one mod that should help gas mileage...I'm sure there may be a few on the market that decrease gas mileage, and there be one or two that have no effect, but your Nismo is probably helping you...Hope that helped

I had the nismo on my Z and I actually didn't notice any change in mpg. I wasn't too impressed with it, throttle response seemed slower, the metal got hotter than the plastic tube, the filter was extremely dirty after 5k miles... I even did a DIY ram air for it but could tell no difference in performance. I've also heard that the air is warmer lower to the ground than where the stock intake sits. But that's just my experience.

However, I did love the sound at high rpms.

Honestly the temp thing i honestly don't believe matters. The funniest things I see are the insulation mess people put on the cai tubes like a buds wrx. Looks like he took owens corning pink stuff out of the attic and taped it on.

I think the cai gets its power at higher speeds when a rammed air effect is created. The stock intake wont get all the same effect as a big open ended tube stuffed into a boxed area down in the grill sucking unimpededly. lol

Your engine is nothing more than an air pump and the more air it takes in, the more fuel you will burn, holding everything else constant, such as fuel/air ratio. Unless the CAI is altering your fuel/air ratio, I don't see how it can be burning less fuel.

Re: About The old CAI issue

The fuel map centers the A:F ratio around 14-15:1, controlled primarily by the MAF sensor and fuel computer. When making the same amount of power as an unmodified engine, a better-flowing intake system will use the same amount of fuel to do so.

You will only experience a drop in fuel economy during times when your engine is making more power than a stock one (all other things held constant) because it requires more fuel to do so. If the previous max was 280hp at WOT, and now you can make 281 to 287hp from 90% throttle and up, you will only lose mpg when you making that extra power. This is because you are now taking in more air than the stock setup was able to do, and the computer is telling the car to use more fuel to keep the mixture within spec according to the map.

Re: About The old CAI issue

After reading all your kindness replys...The nismo CAI start to make no sence to me...I've also reset the ECU by 24hr, and i've notice a kind of smoothness at the low end when the automatic trans. shift from 1st to 2nd...there is no more pushing foward like before, it feels much more better. I've also notice the great sound that CAI make at high rpm, it is solid and hard. does it mean that the CAI will increase the car's power in high rpm?

Re: About The old CAI issue

you did a really good job on the complete DIY!!!
Seriously good explaination!
I've hide the wire on the MAF Housing under so i wont crash it with the hood.
And when i hear the clipe...im not sure im hearing the muffler or the Nismo CAI...how can i tell...
ps. How do you clean the mushroom filter since its under the car...it will take a great efford to reach it...
The sound kindda like mine though...not so sure..

Hi guys!
i just wanna remind you guys about installing the CAI for sedan!
When you instal! you must take off the plastic behind the bumper. So you wont box up the mushroom head! because that defeat the purpose of "cold intake"

which means you will see your mushroom head when you look down for the CAI!
Cheers! it sure make sound better!

Re: About The old CAI issue

IMO - If the sedan nismo is similar to the Z nismo, it may take in more air, but man there were sure a lot of connections and bends in those pipes (which would hurt the flow and throttle response).

Re: About The old CAI issue

Hi Sub, sorry I haven't been checking this thread.

To clean my filter I disconnect it at the MAF housing and take the entire down tube out. It snakes out pretty easily, so I can take the filter right of the end on my workbench.

The sound is coming from the muffler yes, but at 4K there is an obvious difference with the CAI on. It's deeper, louder, and much "growlier". All three CAIs that I have heard sound about the same (Injen, Nismo, and Pop). The Injen and Nismo sound a bit deeper (better IMO), but it's hard to resist the ease and simplicity of the PopCharger. If I had to do it again, I'm not sure what I'd do.

Re: About The old CAI issue

There is only one Nismo CAI and its for 350z but it fits on sedan, most of the mods on 350 will fit sedan. I got a nismo sway bar kit and it works just fine. a little bit better in turn and it was for 350z also
