Crawford Plenum Problem
Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
I'm considering taking a stock plenum and a crawford plenum and hiring a company to do a point cloud (FARO can do this). Basically they have an arm with a ruby tip that touches the part in hundreds of places. It then makes a computer generated solid model of the part. From there, a SLA can be made, and then a good casting can be produced. From there a finish machining operation is needed and viola, a new plenum just as good as the factory plenum, but with all of the added benefits of the crawford.
My guess would be about $1000 a pop. I wonder if anyone would pay that kind of money for a GOOD plenum?

Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
Problem solved.....for now.
I did like Doug said and ignored torque specs and tightened it like I was tightening a rear wheel of a bicycle. Car runs great.
However, when I go to Nashvegas to get my cats and headers done, I'm going to ask Doug to replace the plenum with another that has no to little warpage. 1/16th maximum. Maybe by buying the "Total Package" he'll be willing, and I'm pretty sure he will, he's quite eager to help. We'll see. Until then I'm crossing my fingers that this one doesn't crack. Makes me think I may just keep mine and carry it around in the trunk with a 10mm ratchet and allen wrench set.

Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
When I try to edit a post (for a spelling mistake), I get this:
Darn DED : ded : User
What the heck does that mean?
Anyway, I agree that 60 inch pounds may not be enough, but I don't want other newbies modsters to take that to mean "star torque" it.

Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
it's b/c you signed in with a different capitalization of your userid than the one you signed up with. For example, you first signed up using "ded" but have last signed up using "Ded".

Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
Glad to hear that your problem is solved. I'm waiting for a red V5. I talked to Doug Monday and he said he would probably have one for me by mid next week. The wait is now 3-4 weeks. Gaskets backordered from Nissan. Ugggh!
I'm sure he'll replace it, he sounds like a reasonable guy. Just tell him not to send yours to me.

Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
From the sounds of things, 3/16ths of an inch warpage seems to be typical. Neff you may have really lucked out and got one of the good ones.

Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
Hi All !!
I thought this might be some help on the subject. Yes that would be inch-pounds. The picture shows the order from the manual and 60 is the upper limit of what they suggest.
G35C - 6MT, DG/G, Aero, BSM, Flaps, Stillen Intake, Z tube, Crawford v5, 6 Wire Grounding Kit, Clear Corners, 2nd Battery (Brake) Cover, Sirius, Momo F16 Evo Shifter, 30% 3M Tint & more to go

Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
-fish,
3/16" is BS. The stock plenum is precision machined to a flatness or profile tolerance of less than (I'm guessing here) .030" that is 6 times tighter than your measurement. I'm basing that number on the torque value called out and a little bit of experience.
If Doug had a jig (or tool) that held the part when he welded it in a restrained condition, then stress relieved the tool in the restrained condition he would have a much better (more acurate) product to sell. That's all I'm going to say about this in a public forum because the plenum is a fantastic performance modification, but should be made better IMO.

Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
This thread is making me reconsider to keep the stock just in case. I'm starting to wonder about long-term wear/stress.

Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
There really shouldn't be any long term stress or wear with the plenum. Most of the distortion(s) will result from the welding that could be taken care of by heat treating. After that, there won't be enough heat generated by the engine to change the size/shape of the plenum.
I have to agree with Neff though. 3/16" is outrageous and totally unacceptable.

Re: Crawford Plenum Problem
Xman-
If you think about it, the worst case is you send the plenum back and exchange it for another one. Mine was only slightly "tweaked" maybe 1/16" and the two gaskets were more than ample for me to follow the stock torque specs (which are equivalent to a solid hand tightening).
I would still recommend the mod, just letting everyone know ALL THE INFO...

Thanks Neffster,
I'm consoled. Am I the lone G35Xster for this mod?
