I need a quieter rear section for my sedan, any suggestions

hey guys, i have a complete exhaust setup. from headers to muffler. im basically super loud right now, and i want to go a bit more quieter without sacrificing any hp. i have a tanabe muffler right now. what do you think my options are? i know the hks is pretty loud, so dnt know if i wanna get that. should i use some stock component? btw i have a 04 sedan. i dont want a restrictive rear section though.

Have you looked HERE? Lots of good clips in that thread that should help you decide. If you want to hear my HKS / stock midpipe / HR Y-Pipe combo let me know...I'm sure we can get together at an upcoming meet.

The OEM muffler isn't a restriction and it's actually tuned to work with the motor. It has a flapper valve inside which opens in higher flow situations to improve power and stay closed at lower rpms to improve throttle response and lowend torque. This is the exact setup used on the current and prior gen GTRs, almost all later model BMWs, and Benz's. Quiet does not mean restrictive. Case in point the HKS muffler is louder, but doesn't make a lick of difference in terms of HP. The restrictions lie in the y-pipe and midpipe (somewhat).

I would recommend to put the OEM on, but check out an 05-06 muffler like G SEDAN did...

Post up some pics of your setup... I think you are the one that bought the Tanabe that i wanted to buy from Jonathon right??? hahahaha

Serious though, how much would you let it go for?

+1 on hotdawwgman

try and get the 05 to fit or just slap on your OEM that it came w/. also, listening to sound clips online are really not so useful, in my opinion. you have to hear it in person, ride in the car for drone, etc.

w/ your hfc's and headers, i'm sure you are.

for me, if you're gonna have a super loud exhaust, you'd better have a bite to back up that bark. our cars are slow w/o any type of forced induction. i would feel like a poser if my car was too loud. i already think my car is too loud for it's own good haha but i still want to change out my Y pipe but hesitating bc i don't want to increase the decibels.

The 05/06 muffler is larger to quell the additional noise from the much smaller 05/06 sedan midpipe. More restrictive? I doubt it, but it will be quieter than the 03/04 muffler. IMO, try the 03/04 muffler first. I think it will be enough of a change to make you happy.

The Altima tips can be purchased at any Nissan dealer for around $40 a set. Make sure to get the 2.5 tips and not the 3.5VQ tips. There is a difference in the way they fit.
