Nismo exhaust - compare to Stillen?
Nismo exhaust - compare to Stillen?
It's impossible to hear an exhaust over the internet. I heard the Greddy on the highway and was underwhelmed. Didn't like the pitch of it or something.
I want a moderate change from stock, nothing dramatic or Honda fart can-esque. I was thinking of the Stillen.
How does the Nismo compare? The sound clips of the Nismo I've heard are hard to decipher. I've heard Jason's at Performance Nissan's clips, but he has cats on.
Is the Nismo ricey? Will my wife look at me and say "I can't believe you messed up your car with that stupid exhaust"?
For reference, I had an aftermarket on my Audi, it was deeper than stock, a bit louder, it was perfect. That's what I'm looking for. Thanks,

Re: Nismo exhaust - compare to Stillen?
you'd probably like the Borla better.
it's more for people who want a subtle difference. not much louder and slightly more rumbly. definitely meaner at high rpms.
the stillen has some raspiness and the nismo will have a very "japanese tuner" sound to it.
The problem with most sound clips is that they are just revving in neutral!
cars sound completely different when the car is under load.

I like the Borla because of cost, sound, and weight. But I don't like the moderate amount of torque loss on the low end.
This is the first I heard about the Nismo rice tuner sound. Other feedback I've heard says the Nismo (or Fujitsubo) is a nice deep rumble....Damn it, just when I was convinced of the exhaust I wanted, now I'm hearing contradictory feedback.

Re: Nismo exhaust - compare to Stillen?
Everyone [humans] has a slightly different hearing frequency response vs amplitude. What sounds good to one person can be quite different to another.
Muffler frequency response [output] changes with temperature.
Aging is a prime consideration how the sound changes every 6 months as the rockwool/steel wool gets blown out.

Catatafish, I haven't heard the nismo or fuji, so don't take my impressions of internet sound clips as any indication. Those 2 sounded more like super bikes to me than what I wanted on my car, but again, that's from an internet sound clip. I was judging by the relative frequencies from the often cited exhaust shootout link.
There seems to be quite an array of age groups and demographics on this board. I wish someone with a wife, working in a professional job (i.e., clients get in car), and even though getting older (34), still has a wild side to them, would offer their real world opinions on exhausts. Unfortunately, I don't think the G35C internet community is first large enough, and second, my relative demographic seems the minority.

winw...
FYI, I have a wife, 2 kids, am in my early to mid 30's, looking for a fast, civil, quiet, sleeper G35. As far as my wild side, you'll have to ask DED, PlatG, dabomb, Demonteverde, SFLG35, RedWillow, OMI, trentacinque , Driven, or any of the other guys about that .
I'm currently running the RT Cats, Plenum, Intake, (I have the JIC Y-Pipe in my den and Fujitsubo exhaust on order). If you can hold out I'll give you an impression of my set up compared to Demonteverde's Borla exhaust set up.
Around the first of August I expect to have my exhaust on and broken in... I'll report back then as to how my setup sounds compared to just the Borla (unless Ian gets his high flow cats, then I'll report back with that data). I bet Ian will even let me take his car for a spin (or at least ride along) for a sound comparison.
The above statements are only my take on the issue. If you disagree with anything I typed then you are 100% right!

Re: Nismo exhaust - compare to Stillen?
Thanks neffster, I look forward to your comments.
On another note, do you know if the stock exhaust can be broken down into pieces (i.e., can be more easily stored in a not often travelled corner of the garage by wife)?

Re: Nismo exhaust - compare to Stillen?
lol ....that's funny......but seriously, I have that same question. I guess if the stock exhaust can't be broken into smaller pieces, I can maybe paint it white and maybe it'll be camoflaged and blend into the color of the garage wall. You think she'll still see it?!?!?!?
I plan on bolting on the Stillen TD exhaust soon too.

Re: Nismo exhaust - compare to Stillen?
winw/doc,
I "think" the stock exhaust breaks down into 3 components. Muffler, mid pipe and Y-Pipe. You could probably get a box that is about 40" x 24" x 24" and store the 3 components inside. Keep in mind I'm only guessing as to the size of the muffler, and mid pipe.
FYI, my JIC Y-pipe came in a box that was 38" x 22" x 6", so that's what I'm basing my numbers on. You could buy a white box and store it in the corner and pile a bunch of "man stuff" on top and your wife would never touch it.

Re: Nismo exhaust - compare to Stillen?
I'm a "professional". I have the Stillen exhaust on my sedan. I am older than you with two kids and a wife. I do not drive clients around, just me. Wife thinks it's loud. I think it's awesome. It is by no means raspy. It can be intrusive in the cabin at certain RPMs and under certain load conditions, however, this can be easily avoided by staying in the right gear or better yet, really not giving a rip. I enjoy it greatly. There really isn't that much difference between the Stillen and the stock exhaust sound after about 3000 RPM. There is some resonance around 2300-2800 in all gears. If it bugs you shift. I think this is true of all the exhausts out there to some degree. No substitute for hearing it in person though. Find some friends with exhausts.

I'm thinking, I could store it under my work bench or near where the yard equipment is. She only goes to the trash cans (on occasion), the cabinet with the suntan oil, and the refrigerator.

Re: Nismo exhaust - compare to Stillen?
geeman49, finding friends with exhausts is what I need to do. The coupe is loud anyways. It's a loud car stock. There's a lot of engine noise, exhaust noise and road noise. So I don't mind having a louder exhaust at all. I just don't want a tinny sound, a superbike sound, or a fart can sound. I guess in the end there's probably a handful of exhausts that will satisfy those requirements, it's just a matter of finding one with the right pitch for a particular person. In the end, I'll probably just pull the trigger blind and be done with it.
I wish there was a well made Y pipe to mate to the stock exhaust. That with some cats that won't collapse, a z tube, maybe a plenum, if I could get convinced it's worth it, and a TS ECU and I would be happy. I think.
