HKS muffler only on 05 Sedan- drone question
#16
I think i will first take the recomendation of a can of paint and see if that improves it enough for me to be happy. The main advantage of the HKS for me was the way it looks. I like the polished muffler and the dual tips. The G is my everyday car, and i really dont want to have any annoyances while i drive. As i said in the other thread, if i want loud or a racy sound, I'll drive my Z with the Ti Fuji.
I'm in the same boat really. I've cleaned my stock tips up to the point they look great, but with the OEM muffler it looks like poo....even after painting it satin black. I'd like an all stainless dual-tip muffler...esp on my black sedan with black tint.
Problem is i don't want a noise increase of drone at all. My sedan is my daily driver, and on the highway with the windows up, i don't want to hear any exhaust note at all. Stock volume and tone is perfect for me. There are even sometimes i'll be playing music and hear the drone of the stock muffler under the music and it will annoy me.
I'd hate to install a muffler and be disappointed that the car is now louder...esp with an automatic transmission.
I'm not against loud exhausts. My other car is a highly modified Mustang with a very loud exhaust. I bought my G35 because i wanted a nice quiet daily driver...but now i also want a nice looking SS muffler as well

I had the HKS muffler.....drone was annoying on occasions when:
1)@ highway RPM
2)going up hill
3)having you + 1 passenger
4)combination of any of the above with AC on.
I later sold it.l If you want to increase the apperance of your muffler you can do what I did, paint the muffler flat black and polish the tips.

Borla would drone even more, unless if you swap out the front muffler to a larger xpipe integrated muffler... you might then be closer to the HKS' volume

That's what i figured.
Guess i'll have to find a G35 meet and go check out some exhausts in person and see if i like the increase in sound

We 05/06 guys have to buy the exhaust hanger for the 03-04 for the HKS to fit. I wonder if you could buy someones used hanger and try to fit the 05/06 muffler.

Wish I had gotten my exhaust last week, but I forgot I had to pay a ticket from several months back
I'm getting a muffler, which I'm sure nobody has here so I'll report back if you haven't done anything by then..however, I do have test pipes so it will probably have some rasp to it. Currently, I have rasp (on em exhaust + test pipes + coupe midpipe) at about 3k rpm, not as noticeable in 4th and 5th.
I used to have the HKS and like Marcus said, it has a nice tone to it. I was pleased, but I wanted to try something different and I wanted something louder. I experienced very little drone, only when I was hitting RPM's closer to 5k and up. Definitely a nice note and looks gorgeous.

Wish I would have known that when I ordered mine. I ended up having my muffler guy weld hangers on. Turned out just fine. I'd go with ones made for the vehicle though.
