HKS muffler only on 05 Sedan- drone question

I saw a thread over in the exhaust section and ask a question there but i bet i will get a better idea over here in the sedan section.

I have a Stock 05 Sedan. I have taken my tips off and cleaned them up, but the rest of the muffler looks like poo, and it is fairly noticeable. I am not looking for more power, or more or less sound, or anything really other than a cleaner look. Power gain and weight savings would only be bonuses for me.

I have held off on getting this (or really any exhaust) because of drone complaints. I absolutly love the stock sound and really enjoy its tone just dont like the worn out look.

If i bolt up only the HKS muffler to my all stock 05, will I be happy with the sound, especially at interstate rpm levels? I cant find any decent sound clips on youtube or in the exhaust compilation sticky of just a stock 05 with muffler only.

Thanks!

I had just the HKS muffler for a while on my 05 Sedan (I've since added an HR Y-Pipe). I didn't experience any drone. It is louder than stock but not annoyingly so. IMO it sounds sweet and I always get lots of compliments on the sound (even from Coupe owners). Can't say if you'd like it or not, but most people who get the HKS rear section are pleased with it.

At around 70-75mph there is some drone if you're going uphill and you're hitting the accelerator a little harder, etc..but You can get used to it. It's kinda loud from the backseat area though, some "older" passengers might complain.

Hands down the best exhaust muffler ever made for our cars. I have no problems with mine.

I have the HKS axle back + coupe mid pipe, Freeway drives are perfect not loud what so ever, most of the time my music covers all of the sound so its perfect. and when u compare the sedan vs. coupe mid pipe, there's like 200lb difference (ok not that much but a lot)

my friends always argue what sounds better, my buddies STi HKS rumble sound or my HKS sedan hum...i love it!

I had an HKS muffler for a short time. In my opinion the drone was excessive and unacceptable. Goes to show the differences in personal taste. I really like the sound of the muffler but whenever I'd lightly press the accelerator when cruising and, especially when going up a slight uphill, the drone drove me crazy. I had to sell it. I drive about 25000 miles per year so this was of particular significance to me. My suggestion would be to find someone with the HKS who lives near you and ask for a test drive. This way you can be certain.
BTW, I went back to the stock muffler and have not regretted it at all. In fact, after 4 years and 90000 miles, I think it sounds better now than when new. Every year I take some high heat matte black paint (barbecue paint?) and touch up the muffler. Still looks like new.
I must admit though that the stainless look of the HKS was fabulous.

for when I had the HKS, I experienced no drone at all man. I had it paired with the coupe middy and it was beautiful. I loved the sound at crusin speed and at WOT.... amazing. Loved every second of it. Really miss it. You'll be more than happy with the HKS. GET IT ASAP!

Swap out the 05 muffler for the smaller 03/04 sedan muffler. You'll get a nice noise increase without any drone. If you want even more noise with awesome throttle response then source a 07/08 350Z HR y-pipe.

I think i will first take the recomendation of a can of paint and see if that improves it enough for me to be happy. The main advantage of the HKS for me was the way it looks. I like the polished muffler and the dual tips. The G is my everyday car, and i really dont want to have any annoyances while i drive. As i said in the other thread, if i want loud or a racy sound, I'll drive my Z with the Ti Fuji.

hks + coupe midpipe put a smile on my face, and disappointed it took me a year to get it, def one of the first mods to get, I don't like loud exhausts, my family and some co-workers can hear theres an exhaust when in the car, but no one complained about it once...

There was a guy on here who polished up his stock muffler. Not as shiny as hks, but it looked pretty good.

I had the HKS muffler.....drone was annoying on occasions when:

1)@ highway RPM
2)going up hill
3)having you + 1 passenger
4)combination of any of the above with AC on.

I later sold it.l If you want to increase the apperance of your muffler you can do what I did, paint the muffler flat black and polish the tips.

Damn! Here I thought the HKS was gold. Seems like alot of noise just for a muffler.

I wonder if my custom Borla dual drones less then this thing?
