Plenum spacer install gone bad

I bought a motordyne plenum spacer for my 03 G35 sedan 6-mt and installed it with a buddy that had the tools. We got the upper plenum off and mounted the spacer in and put all the bolts in place and hand tightened them all. Then we started in sequence torquing the bolts on at 40 inch-pounds and we were using a torque wrench that had a minimum of 30 ft. lbs. which is obviously the wrong torque wrench, we broke the bolt in half the bolt being stuck in my lower plenum tried to get it out with one of those drill bit kits that help get broken bolts out ended up breaking the tip on the drill bit and now that is stuck in the engine in the bolt that broke. So now in the morning i have to call Triple AAA take it to a mechanic to get that bolt out and install that spacer so i can drive. I know im a dumb *** but its the first real mod i did to a engine but ill get it fixed gotta spend alittle extra money but luckily my buddy works at this purcells im going to so ill get hooked up.

That sucks man. Just take it as a lesson learned, an expensive one at that. I would recommend you spend time watching someone with experience wrench on cars before you start doing it yourself.

Just relying on videos isn't enough. It only helps if you've already done basic installs in the past. Experience would've suggested that you use a regular ratchet wrench to tighten the bolts if you had no access to the right tool. Sometimes, you can feel out the proper torque setting for a certain application. Changing a lot of spark plugs will help you develop this skill.

If anyone ever doubts their mechanical skills or the torqe wrench calibration, just use the leather glove and nut driver tightening method shown in the instruction manual.

The nut driver method doesn't guarantee precision torque levels like a torque wrench, but it will be almost impossible to break any bolts with it.
