Cats installation

I went to several places and got very different installation price. $150 to $250. One say he will have to remove all my air intake because he cant access to the bolts by the bottom! Weird. Another almost threw me out saying they can be fine $25000 even I told him the Kinetix are street legal. What are your experience guys?

Re: Cats installation

Cost me $25.00 for the install of my Crawfords. I was going to do it myself, but my ramps are low, and it would have been a PITA.

Re: Cats installation

Gosh ... for 25 bux I would too. That is dirty cheap and certainly not worth one's own time to DIY.

Re: Cats installation

Be sure to keep your old cats because it is a felony to sell your car with modified cats..............you can be held responsible after the sale for emission tampering even 6 years later when the mods are discovered! You can be held responsiblee for returning the car perfectly to oem.

Re: Cats installation

Federal and state laws [not all states to same degree] hold the seller responsible for emission tampering [why you must get a clean emission certificate to transfer the title]. If later the buyer finds you changed/delete oem components they can sue you to restore plus your act of supplying a clean emission certificate is title transfer fraud. So the State may fine you later.
Dealers are held to a higher standard than individuals so the chain of punishment may stop with them if you trade a car in and they don't examine it and subsequently resell it. But they and everyone has a statue of limitations to come back to the modifier.
Shops in states can be fined $2500-$10,000 per incident for illegally changing cats on cars with less than 50,000 miles.

EPA doesn't waste time going after owners they just make you turn in the shop that did the work........keep the documents and never pay cash without a record of work.
Shops are supposed to store changed convertors for 6 months for analysis and send records to EPA everytime.

Obviously many ignore the law until caught. Not a good idea to list name of shops which break the law on INET they may get angry with you if caught.

All the so called high performance cats are just generic replacements designed to be used later in cars life to pass emissions one time........they have limited life and minimal catalysts to sell cheap, some how they have been expanded [by marketing] to be "Performance Cats" ........sure they have less back pressure because there is not much inside just enough to get by one year maybe 2 or in the case of some brands a few months.

We see this all the time in high mileage G20/J30/Q they get the cats changed at a muffler shop to pass inspection then come to us a year later when they fail again.
OEM by law must last between 70,000 and 100,000 miles before replacement. There are no rules for aftermarket!

Re: Cats installation

$37.50 for the install of my RT's. The job was done on a lift with an airgun and (2) different attachments. It took MAYBE 30 minutes because the drivers side cat is a PITA to reach w/o the proper equipment. If someone wants to remove your Intake, find another shop.

Luckily I have a receipt, paid with American Express and even have the shops name on it with a description of the work.

The above statements are only my take on the issue. If you disagree with anything I typed then you are 100% right!
