2.5 in and 3 out is an over kill.

now if it was 2.25 in and 2.5 out now that would of been the best option.

350z HR y pipe is still the pipe to go after.

I would agree. The goal is to keep exhaust velocity high and keep the gases hot. Bigger isn't always better, especially when it comes to NA motors. When the pipes are too large the exhaust gas flow slows down and the gases cool in the pipes in the lower rpms, resulting in a soft lowend because the gases slow down and actually pose a restriction. In the mid to upper rpms, there typically are some gains; however, these gains are often negated by the reduce power in the lower rpms. A slow 1st gear has a very large effect on 0-60 and 1/4 mile acceleration. The MD XYZ pipe has the same exact dimensions as this aftermarket y-pipe and the MD pipe shows a loss of around 7-8whp below 2500rpms. That's not huge deal if you've got a 6MT, but it would absolutely suck if you've got an auto that spends most of it's life below 3000rpms. I would assume this y-pipe would behave the same way. The good news is there are gains (6-8whp) in the upper rpms.

The HR y-pipe has ~2.2" ID runners and a ~2.45" outlet. This matches up perfectly with the OEM cats and the midpipe. The HR y-pipe shows no loss in power in the lower rpms and shows a gain of around 6-7whp in the mid to upper rpm range.

As for a change in gearing with the HR y-pipe, what I noticed in slightly firmer shifting and overall slightly more responsive shifting auto. The HR y-pipe also seems to give the 5AT a little more initial torque right off idle. I can't verify any of this, but many other HR y-pipe owners report similiar findings.

That aftermarket Y pipe would be great for FI due to the pipe sizes and probably keep the same kind of sounds too

I don’t think it’s overkill at all, considering all single path exhaust setups for our car run 3” piping. It’s not meant to be the “end all, be all.” It’s an after-market option designed to finish off an after-market setup. Really a great option for those hella expensive JDM y-pipe back setups. This pipe is more that a “healthy medium” between the MD-XYZ and the OEM 350Z-HR.

Hydrazine is an advocate of the bigger pipe. I think mentions that once the Y is merged the outlet dia doesn't make that much diff unless it was too small.

For reference, the Stillen dual has 2.5" pipes. The Borla dual has 2.25" pipes.

I think this is a decent unit for $165. If one is that concerned about the 3" outlet, you can always weld a 3" to 2.5" reducer cone if you want to run a 2.5" single out to the back.

then the 165.00 is no longer once you have to modify it.

you don't "have to" modify it
