slip-vdc problem

Seeing how I could not afford a K&N intake kit, I did the next best thing, I thought, I modified the original. In my thinking, I installed a K&N filter, removed all the intake plastic and then took the intake box, cutting the bottom piece off and plugging the hole. Now, the engine shuts off while driving, the slip light, and the VDC come on. The engine will restart but the lights stay on, even after attempting to reset the computer, disconnect the battery and pump the brakes. The reset works for a couple of days and then it does it again.

At first, I noticed an improvement in the shifting and in reaching RPMs, but if this keeps up then I have to buy a new intake box.

Can someone help or am I doomed?

Thanks for the response. Would it be better to get a 350Z intake tube or breakdown, safe the money and buy the K&N kit, but then would I still have the same problem? I like the fact that it shifts better, less pause between gears (this is a sedan with A/T and I use the manual shift all the time. The box I am talking about is between the air filter and throttle body.
