Catalytic Converter

I have a 04 6mt coupe and i have been hearing this damn rattling sound from under the left side of my car, so i go put it on the lift and its my catalytic converter. It sounds like a midget is in there with a hammer just banging away. I go to my local muffler shop and tell them i just want them both cut out, they say no it cant be done it will mess the whole car up?

So my question is, can i have my cats cut out or do i need to buy high flow cats or is there a test pipe of some sort i can get? Thanks guys

you could get them cut out and replaced with just pipes, or get high flow cats or test pipes. Test pipes have no cats, and will throw a cel.

Now if i remove the cats, the 2 sensors that are located in the middle of the cats, do i need to have holes put in the test pipes for the sensors or eliminate them?

I would think that a weld or 17 popped on the heat shield(s) around the cats. See if they can either remove the shields, or better, weld them back together

Question Shane, is the rattle coming from inside the cats or is it the shield? If they need replacing get HFCs (high flow cats) at least you'll be legal. Berk's are the most reasonable HFCs and I love the extra HP and sound they allow. For the best price they can be found on our MARKETPLACE under vendor exhaust!

I've had the heat shield's cut off of my cats. Due to being low and scraping them up, and deterioration of the crappy metal used for the shields. The muffler shop you speak of should do this for you.

Its actually the internal part of the cat, i had them check the heat shield thats above them and the ones surrounding, everything was super tight. I just purchased some Kinetix Racing Resonated Test/Race Pipes. Apparently they can be installed in a 04 and the cel will not come on? I live in South Carolina so no car inspections here! . have you heard anything good or bad about these resonated test pipes?

test pipes, even resonated ones will make the exhaust sound raspy. I put on Kinetix V2 HFC yesterday on my sedan. love the sound

test pipes will make the CEL come on if you dont have non foulers

I have the same issue. Rattle sound coming from under the car turned out to be something broken off inside the cats. Dealer quoted me $1300 to replace with OEM but there is no way I can see paying that much. I want to get some high flow cats but still want to keep it legal. Berks are legal? Im in Cali so I need to be careful what I put on.

If you're going to get test pipes, do it right and get ART pipes.

OP, how many miles do you have? The catalytic converter warranty is 8 yrs/80k miles. I would make Infiniti eat it, so you can have new low mileage catalytic converters to do whatever you want with!
