Test Pipes vs. High Flow Cats

Hey all,

I'm looking to amplify my stock G35 exhaust sound (but not too loud to where it is loud and annoying). I was looking into Megan v2 test pipes but there were a few things that kept me from pulling the trigger on them. For example, the emitted gas fumes, they are illegal here in California, and I won't be able to pass a smog check with them installed. After finding this out it just wasn't worth it for me to purchase them. Now, I discovered these FI HFC's. These seem to be a better source of amplification and possible. I have a few questions (Before I get bashed, let me add that I did search the forum but didn't seem to find what I was looking for). Here we go:

1.)How do these FI HFC's match up against test pipes? (Megan V2 to be specific)
2.)Are there any noticeable gains from these cats?
3.)How good is the quality on these cats?
4.)I know these won't throw the CEL light, but will I pass a smog check?
5.)Do these HFC's emit any gas fumes that can noticeably smelled like the test pipes?
6.)Give me your quick open review about these HFC's.

HERE IS THE LINK TO THE FI HFC's:

Thanks for your help in advance!

2.)Are there any noticeable gains from these cats? Yes, the OEM cats are the most restrictive part of the exhaust.
3.)How good is the quality on these cats? Don't know.
4.)I know these won't throw the CEL light, but will I pass a smog check? You should no problem. You might not pass the visual inspection though if you have one.
5.)Do these HFC's emit any gas fumes that can noticeably smelled like the test pipes? Not really.
6.)Give me your quick open review about these HFC's. No experience with them so can't help here.

1. FI is way better, I used to run megan v2 test pipes if you watch my videos.- as you can see, there's a reason why I went with FI.

2. Yes. OEM cats suck.

3. Very good, Tony from FI builds these all by himself and he does great work, the welds are top notch.

4. You should be okay but not sure about visual inspection (if you guys have that there- here in Chicago we don't)

5. Nope. test pipes will give you fumes, any test pipes will.

6. I have no experience with FI HFC's but I have FI RTPs and so far they are fantastic. I've never heard of anything bad with a company like FI as far as their build quality goes and customer service is excellent.

You will NOT pass smog anymore with HFC..standards have been raised and you will fail the smog unless you put the stock cats back on. There was someone on the board I remember reading about and he had to go back to stock cats to pass.

I have FI HFC, they are awesome. Like it has being mention already, the quality is top notch, Tony knows his stuff. I don't know how much HP gains you will get because I have not dyno my car yet, Tony can answer that one. What ever gains you will get is not noticeable, at least I didn't notice any difference, except for sound and gas mileage. You will not pass CA smog with HFC, I couldn't find any shop in Cali to install them, I had Rusty (ExtremeG) do it.

Thanks alot lsmooth81. How much did you pay for your FI HFC? Is Tony here on the forum? What is his forum name so that I can contact him regarding these cats.

Tofu,

I was searching though your YouTube videos and I found this one. Is this the best way to differentiate between the sound of a Megan v2 and a FI HFC. Correct me if I'm wrong but the FI HFC sounds alot more deeper, somewhat of a growl compared to the Megan v2. Then again I'm not sure if that is the echo from the parking structure that is playing tricks with the camera's sound capture.

I don't remember, how much I paid, I think almost $500. Fast Intention is a vendor in this forum, but the best way to get a hold of Tony is call directly the shop 818-882-2788

1. the Megan v2 were all right but their resonators kept breaking loose, not great weld quality, I've been through 2-3 of them.

2. In that video my buddy (tiguy99) with the white coupe was running Berk HFCs, and with his FI exhaust it ran very deep.
Upon startup both of our cars have a deep tone to it but throughout the rpm range his exhaust stayed deep whereas mine went slightly higher and was definitely louder, his was more 'bassy'.

3. Right now I run FI rtps with my setup with the nismo and it sounds cleaner by far. I have yet to post up a video but I honestly doubt I'll have the time since the weather here is still crap and I will be having the FI exhaust on in a couple of weeks- however if you'd like me to, I can make a video and post it up here for reference for you as well as in the "exhaust compliation" thread as well. You'll see more of my videos in that thread as well.

So far with HFCs I notice it obviously no rasp even with my rtps there is light light very light rasp but of course you'll also have the fuel smell which I personally don't mind and it's a lot less abundant with my FI rtps than when I had my megan v2 rtps. Which I find somewhat interesting.

Any other questions, feel more than free to ask.

The camera I used in those videos actually captured the sound quality pretty well if you're at home and pair it up to your computer with a 8" sub and such, it hits on the sound pretty close in my opinion. I've since broken that camera (it stopped working by itself darn it) and I now have a Sony Handycam which I'll be using to record any future videos if needed.

I've read a lot of info pertaining to RTPs with mixed reviews on whether or not it will throw a CEL. What test pipes are people running, and are you getting a light? Is anyone running TopSpeed? I've also read about people using non-foulers to correct this. Are they pricey and where can you buy them?

Thanks in advance.

With the megan v2 you will pull it, but sometimes you wont.
Safest bet is to get o2 simulators. they push the o2 sensor out about another inch from the bung itself.

With my FI rtps I have no issue, main reason for this is because unlike the megan v2 rtps, the bung is bent in a "L" shape and is also a tad longer than the megan v2, the megan v2 bungs are just a simple "-". I run no o2 simulators on my FI rtps and it's been over 300 miles with no issues. Uusually if a CEL is to pop on you'll get one within about 100-200 miles max.

O2 simulators (non foulers) are cheap, you can get them at any auto parts store.

Thanks! That doesn't seem too complicated. Now I just need to find a pair that sound good and purchase them.
