Talking Air intake preferences - for day to day, not the track

Hi all,

The '04 G35 sedan that was my wife's daily driver and kid taxi is now going to be my daily driver. I'm itching to do a couple mods here and there and, as a motorcycle owner, I know one of the best bangs for buck is the air intake. I'm not going to go crazy with the old sedan with 125K miles on it, so no spacers, plenums, etc.

So what do you guys think of the following?
Add a Z-tube, leave OEM air box
Add Z-tube and JWT Pop charger
Add Z-tube and CAI/other cone filter
Add Z-tube and aftermarket drop-in filter (Apexi, etc)

I'm leaning on the Pop charger because they are C.A.R.B. approved (I live in Kommiefornia) meaning I'll be OK at smog inspections. Not that anyone would notice a drop-in replacement filter either.

I know you get more sound than hp, but hey, I'm looking to have some fun.

You will maybe get 2-3 hp at most with the air intake. Sound is the result of aftermarket intakes. See this testing:

https://g35driver.com/forums/intake-...s-results.html

I'm running a Stillen Z Tube and Pop Charger. I feel like the pop charger adds the most sound. Makes the engine sound much "throatier" and sounds just more aggressive and louder.

oem z-tube / stillen z tube and K&N drop in will do ya just fine unless you want that wistling sound that the JWT filter has

like ^he said no real gains with intakes on these cars more or less for sounds

look into SxExCx grounding kit for the 5AT helps with quicker shifts and smoother power, Motordyne 5/16ths plenum spacer is another bang 4 buck and can be installed on your own w/ torque wrench

hope this helps, any more questions just search there are tons of threads that might cover what your interested in.... cheers!

Go with the stillen air box and z tube. I'm running them now and it adds a little throughty sound but it's not obnoxious.

Z-TUBE

Made of rotomolded plastic, this product has excellent insulation qualities. This helps to isolate incoming air from engine heat, resulting in a colder intake charge and increased power. Use this with the stock airbox or for maximum gains add the STILLEN Hi-Flow Intake, our part #402835.

INTAKE

Due to the different states of tune of each model, the intake (independent of the Z-Tube) adds 11 horsepower at 6,100 RPM to the G35 Sedan and 5 ponies at 5,700 RPM to the Coupe. Comprised of a high-quality polyurethane intake port, washable and reusable cotton filter element, and STILLEN's signature Aluminum Venturi Ring, the Intake draws air from outside the engine bay.

The Venturi ring acts as a velocity stack, speeding up and directing the airflow into the intake chambers, making more useable and noticeable power.

The Intake System also lends a more aggressive tone to the G35 and FX35 when pressed, but remains unobtrusive at idle. Every magazine has been impressed with the G35's performance characteristics; and the STILLEN Hi-Flow Intake System is the perfect way to add an edge to yours.

Z-TUBE / INTAKE COMBO

The Z-Tube / Intake Combo package is the affordable way to upgrade the entire intake tract, combining the Z-Tube (Part #402834) and Hi-Flow Intake (Part #402835) in one convenient part number.

I'll have to see if I still have my Z tube still. I can't remember if I had that or the oem G tube at the time of the accident

Z - TUBE

K&N drop in filter

and a oem REV-UP air box - rev-up air box has a huge velocity stack which makes it sound way better then just a stock g35 air box

I still use my stock intake with exception of a drop-in filter and oem Z-tube. I guess I should upgrade sometime to get that sound.

The only ones I can recommend are the OEM Revup airbox, Stillen and maybe the R2C intake.

Don't expect any gains on the butt dyno.

I appreciate all the responses guys. Like I said, I'm not expecting much if anything but some sound; I want to have a little fun and enjoy the G35.

Interesting comments about the "poop" or pop charger coming in that has me second guessing it.

Anyone else care to put in their two cents?

i had the pop charger for almost a year til i sold it...switched to a revup airbox and k&n filter. I honestly really miss the sound, it took quite a while now to get used to not having it. I'll definitely be getting another one in a little while and swap between the two. Both are paired with a ztube, i noticed slightly better gas mileage with the stock box and better throttle response by far. Idles better as well

I still have my Stillen CAI. Fortunately it wasn't on the car when I got hit.
