Need exhaust options for a 2004 G35x sedan

Hi folks,

Let me start out by saying that I'm not a car person, so this will be my first foray into car mods and parts. So I apologize in advance if my knowledge of cars is not as advanced as y'all.

So let's begin. My car is a 2004 G35x AWD sedan. Over the past few months the car began getting really loud and I heard lots of rattling when accelerating. So I brought it in to Midas so I could take a peek at what was going on under there. What we found was a lot of rust, haha. The rust had eaten through the connection between the muffler and the midpipe/resonator assembly (the gigantic thing b/t the y pipe and muffler). So the muffler is not connected to the rest of the exhaust system. I imagine this is why its so loud. Also, we found that the heat shields on the y pipe were incredibly rusted away.

So, my questions are:
  1. What are my options for repairing my exhaust?
  2. Should I go with OEM replacement parts or buy an aftermarket exhaust system?
  3. Is removing the heat shields from the bottom of the y pipe safe?

I've done some initial research and two aftermarket systems popped out at me:
Any opinions on these? I'm looking for an exhaust system with a moderate sound. Nothing too crazy. If I were to replace with OEM parts, I've read on this forum that the G35 coupe pipe can fit on the sedan and would make a good "mod". Is this the case? Anyway, hopefully this is enough information for you guys to help me get on the right path. If you have any questions, please let me know.

You can try an hr y pipe for a little more sound. Sounds like you want to keep it tame. If not, go for a full catback. Exhaust was my first mod and I was extremely happy and still have been. Also, feel free to lose the heat shields too. I had mine on until the rust became pretty bad and it became obvious as they would be pinging more than usual.
Stillen makes a Good exhaust and should keep that VQ note still recognizable while being more aggressive. With my HKS I feel like I have almost lost the stock staccato note completely but that works for me lol.

My exhaust was starting to rust so I went ahead and bought the motordyne tdx v2 w/ art pipes due to the excellent reviews and will say it has been one of my favorite mods. If your wanting a better sound from your G then get an aftermarket cat back, but if you want to maintain the stock sound then get oem parts

So can anyone confirm that the following two parts will work for my G35x?

20300-AM800: Coupe midpipe
20100-AM660: Sedan muffler

Would I also have to buy new gaskets?

The coupe middy would work and just make sure the muffler is for an 03-04 sedan. The one from an 05-06 would fit but you'd need to buy a new muffler bracket to make it work. I can't verify which muffler that parts number is for.

I too have run into the same problem as the original poster. I took my car to the shop and they are charging me $600. Does this sound like I'm getting shafted?

Was wondering if I was? Any feed back would be helpful...I do not know what kind of exhaust its getting replaced with my guess is OEM parts?

Thanks

Hi, OP here. I ended up going to Midas and they just welded a a pipe around the broken connection for ~$150. So it really depends on whether or not you want a quick fix or new parts, etc.
