K&N air filter - Good?-

Is anyone using a K&N in there sedan, did you notice anything different? Any issues? I had one in my 99 Accord coupe V6 and I noticed my gas milage increased by about 30 miles per tank full of gas. My Infiniti dealer says the filter does not seal right in the G. When I had my A4 audi, they claim it could cause the mass air flow sensor to go bad, Due to oil from the air filter. Please let me know how the K&N filter works in the G.

Re: K&N air filter - Good?-

I had one in my G for a few thousand miles. Didn't notice anything in terms of power or even fuel economy. I took it out because of the MAF sensor concerns. My dealership basically said that if the sensor goes bad and you have an oiled filter, they will not cover it under warranty.

I called Infiniti Consumer Affairs and asked them if they knew about the Magnusson Moss Act and that the dealer must show that the problem was caused by the mod. They said yes but that they would only take the recommendation of the dealer. They will not independently inspect or overrule the dealer.

My Dealership sucks so I took mine out. If I had noticed something in terms of power or mileage, I would have kept it in and taken the chance.

My bud who has a jetta had the K&N and had some problems with his MAF. He had to shell out for a new one. That pretty much made up my mind for me.

Hope this helps. BTW, I still have it if you're interested. :-)

Instead of a paper element that has tiny little holes that lets the air through it but not the particles (in theory), the K&N filter relies on oil to catch the debris/dust from passing through it.

They come pre-oiled from the factory and can be cleaned and re-oiled (with a "recharging kit") so you don't have to purchase another one.

Re: K&N air filter - Good?-

I have been using air K&N filters religiously in all my cars for several years without any problems. Additionally, I have never heard a derogatory remark from a dealer service department regarding warranty issue and the use of a K&N. I have used the K&N’s on several fuel-injected cars with MAF sensors and have never had a problem with them. I currently have a K&N in my 2000 Saturn LS2 3.0V6 and my 1997 Mazda Miata MX5 1.8L DOHC and none have ever had a MAF malfunction. Furthermore, I have had K&N’s on a Porsche 911S, Fiero GT and several 5.0L Mustangs without any problems whatsoever. The only thing I can think of, is when the filters are cleaned and re-oiled, the individual spays an excessive amount of oil onto the filter? This is just an assumption? I can honestly say that a K&N is good for 2-8 HP on my Saturn (which is still under warranty and serviced be my local dealer) and 5-10 HP on my Miata. Just my opnion.

Re: K&N air filter - Good?-

The only time I've heard of a K&N causing problems with the MAF is when they are cleaned and re-oiled with too much oil. Some people think that if a little oil is good, more will be better!

The same type of filter (oil impregnated cotton gauze) is used on most CAI setups with a high-flow cone type shape.

So far, I haven't heard any G35 owners with MAF problems. One thing to consider is that with the stock filter which you must replace (sometimes annually), the price is about 1/3 what you can buy a K&N for that is basically permanent. Some have reported dyno-proven gains with just the drop-in filter.

Just some things to consider.

I put a K&N filter in my G35 sedan. I notice a definite improvement
in accelaration. I also notice a decrease in gas mileage. Please see
my new post "K&N filter dilema"
