K&N filter dilema

I bought a K&N air filter for my G35 Sedan. After having the dealer
show me how to replace the air filter, I installed it and disconnected
the negative terminal of the battery for 1 hour to reset the computer.
I expected to see an improvement in both gas mileage and power.....
I feel that acceleration has improved, but my gas mileage has
dropped from 19 to 16(city). This filter will not pay for it'self as K&N
claims. I related this story to a Infiniti technician at the dealership.
He told me that I would not notice a difference and it is a waste,
will not notice any horsepower gains. I disagree.....I do notice quite
a difference. Both in acceleration and in economy. What do you guys
think about the K&N filter? What kind of gas mileage do you get
in city driving. Appreciate any thoughts about this!

Re: K&N filter dilema

I suspected that it might just be "wishful thinking". I removed the
K&N filter for 1 tank of gas. Noticed the accelaration was less
of a thrill. Just re-installed the K&N and confirmed the acceleration
"seems" better. Maybe its the sound..... I don't know!
Thought about the "lead foot syndrome". I deliberatly drove like
a "nancy" for a tank or two. The mileage is nowhere near 19,
more like 16.

Re: K&N filter dilema

I haven't noticed much of a sound change but it does pull better at 70 MPH. Helps with the 2 lane passes.

Re: K&N filter dilema

What you're feeling is the effect of the ECU reset, not the K&N filter. It's shifting harder and revving higher, so it's accelerating faster. That's also why your gas mileage has decreased. High revs = low gas mileage.

The biggest effect the filter will have is on sound. Horsepower and gas mileage effects will be negligible. But even at 1 hp, it's priced right at $40-50. That's less than what 1 hp costs on most larger mods.

K&N Technical department advised me to:

Hello David,

It sounds like your vehicle is not cooperating with the K&N. I
recommend you take out the K&N and install a paper filter.

Cato, is you're filter is the K&N factory replacement (panel type)?

I installed a K&N panel filter right after I my G35 Sedan (Auto) almost a year ago. I noted a small increase in gas mileage (1-2mpg) depending on how and where I drove the car. As for increased performance, my seat of the pants dyno-butt was inconclusive.

Yes, it is the non-cartridge type specifically
recommended by K&N.

Re: K&N filter dilema

K&N doesn't understand what you did. You reset the ECU when you installed the filter. That usually causes a significant change in the car's fuel management.

Try this: reinstall the original paper filter, then make sure you reset the ECU again like you did before. I bet it will be just as bad if not worse, unless you lay off the gas pedal.

JDMan,

I have done this twice, gone back to the paper filter.
Both times the gas mileage returned to normal.

Re: K&N filter dilema

disconnecting the battery for only an hour wont reset the ECU, it has to be disconencted for 12+ hours. It probably took about an hour just to get rid of teh extra juice in the power system. Unplug, then tap the brakes until no lights shine..then let it go overnight...

Its worth a shot...

Re: K&N filter dilema

I asked the Infiniti Technician if 1 hour battery disconnect
would reset the computer. He indicated it would. I also
stepped on the break pedal for awhile during the last
attempt at resetting the damn thing. I wonder if the G35
computer is programmed to change settings when air flow
increases, or just throw more fuel at it to keep the factory
air/fuel mixture. If not, then the K&N is a waste and so are the
CAIs everyone talks about.

G35 Coupe w/ K&N CAI
Re: K&N filter dilema

Presently I have a drop in OEM fit K & N in my Coupe & have had NONE of these problems. I have also been involved in the prototyping for the new K &N CAI, & none of this ever came up in testing there either. Of more interest is the fact that there is a TSB for the 5AT's, & also one for the Engine Control System. With resetting the computer etc, it is likely that the problems could be related to these bugs they have found in the cars systems. The TSB #'s are as follows:
TSB# 03020 / Coupe / Engine Control System
TSB# 02074 / Coupe & Sedan 5AT / Auto Tranny harsh shift problems, harsh & or erratic shifting, if found they have to replace the TCM (Transmission Control Module).

I would look into these items as well & see what you come up with. My Coupe got better mileage with the drop in K & N than it did with the stock paper filter, not by much, but it certianly did not get worse....
